Sliding door problem on 2017 NVP

Recommended Posts

I've seen numerous posts on here about sliding door issues.....mine seems to be similar to some but not quite!

Just bought our 2017 NV 3500 a little over a month ago (just made my first post on here a couple of weeks ago).  About 1600 miles on the van.  Two days ago, my wife calls to tell me that the interior lights won't turn off while they're driving down the road.  I ask if she got all of the doors closed, and she said that the door ajar light was on.  Had her try re-closing all of the doors, still on.

So, it definitely is the sliding door.  What happens is when you try to close it, it doesn't quite close all of the way.  Actually, it kind of will if you slam it, but then the back "pops" back open about 1/2 of an inch.  This is the same as a previous poster I saw from 3-4 years ago.

The door doesn't squeak when driving like some others, and it can't be opened when locked (setting off the alarm, like some others).  It just doesn't close all the way, and when you try to lock with the key fob, the horn won't beep.  But the door still locks anyway.

So I take it in to the dealer earlier today.  They figure out that if you manually lock the door prior to closing it, the door will close and latch just fine.  However, if the door is unlocked, it won't work.  It worked fine when closing it while unlocked for the entire time we've had it, obviously.  The dealer sent me home tonight with it, and are going to call the tech center tomorrow and see what the fix could possibly be before tearing it open.

After I got home from the dealer today, my wife remembered that on the drive before the door wouldn't close, she heard something "drop" from the area by the door, what she said sounded like a bolt or something, but at the time she thought it was from outside the car, or a rock or whatever.  So maybe something came unscrewed inside?

The person that had the problem of the 1/2 gap at the back of the door like I do, seemed to solve the problem by inserting shims or washers and then it worked fine.  Seems like this isn't the problem here, but I dunno.  For those of you that know, where the heck do you put the washers anyway?  I'm expecting the dealer to fix the problem, but if I can help them along with the fix I'll get out of this without 4 trips to the dealer and entire Saturdays shot.

Dropped the van off last night, was fixed this morning.  I didn't get a lot of good information, other than they told me that a cable had been improperly installed from the factory, it came loose, and that obviously caused the issue.

If the dealer is correct, this is now the 2nd issue in the first month/1700 miles that was "not installed properly at the factory."  Not sure how normal this is, but not exactly confidence-building!

I had a problem with the alignment in my 2017. Unfortunately just like any business, a production line is only as good as its worst worker. Maybe the guy that assembled your sliding door was doing alignments the day my van was built. Every business has them, the slack worker that doesn't know what a good job is, and everything is " good enough" to them.

Glad it was resolved.

I work in the new housing industry and it's my job to fix problems after the homeowners move in. I'm guessing car production is similar, the vehicles are thrown together quickly, people try to do a good job but some issues slip through, and it's left to the dealers to resolve any problems. It's frustrating but if every vehicle was meticulously gone over to make them perfect production would grind to a halt.

That being said, glad you bought this van, it really is a awesome vehicle. It is the best heavy duty vehicle I have ever driven, and defiantly my favourite that I have ever owned.

Good point about any business being as good as its worst worker.  I think I'm just glad that the two things that have happened have been easy fixes.  What were your alignment issues?

I'm in the same boat about the van though, I love it.  It felt great driving it back home from the dealer yesterday.
