fender bender

Recommended Posts

So I have a 2015 NV 3500 Passenger SL.....I was parked on a side street and someone backed into me and and took off causing damage to my front bumper and now the front sensors just constantly beep.

How hard is it to replace and install the bumper on my own? anyone have to do this....I would like to avoid insurance because i have a higher deductible

I don't know how hard it is, but those sensors are crazy expensive if you have to replace them.  I broke one of the rear sensors, and it cost hundreds of dollars for the replacement part.

Good luck!

A new front bumper is not that expensive and if the sensors are intact you will not have to replace them. The key issue will be the plastic that holds them in place. It cannot be repaired, you can try glueing it in. Ugly!

You might try a local body shop to see if they can pull it out enough to stop the beeping and reposition the bumper if needed so it will keep it from damaging the facia above it if bumped again. A dealership shop will most likely just want to replace the bumper.

I have a thing with boulders in the wilderness. I backed into one but convinced the dealership to massage it back in shape and position. Sensors were ok, Earlier, I had to replace one someone else bashed. Expensive! Rode up on a boulder pushing in/up the lower portion of the right front bumper. No body damage and the bumper stayed in place. Bodyshop manager at same dealership said leave it alone or replace it for $450 plus labor. (Rear bumper is twice that.)

When I have to replace them, it may be time to look at Aluminess (? Spelling) bumpers.

Bumpers are not too expensive and they can be replaced with a decent set of tools.  I actually need to work on my front bumper.  My wife backed into me!!  Dented the center of it and now my sensors beep a lot.  Not all the time but enough that I just turn them off.  I plan on trying to pound it out first and if I cant I will get a new one.  I think a new aftermarket bumper that looks like factory is around $300-$400-ish.

Bumper and install costs $1500. Been through this already. My fog light was busted too.

That’s steep. The cargo front bumper is less complicated and expensive, no sensors or fog lights.

All the more reason to try to fix, not replace.

Mine did include a professional install, I think labor was half of that.

Good luck taking a dent out of chrome without it looking like a mess.

Last I looked it was $450 for a chrome front bumper and about $325 for the black bumper.  Lots of bolts to pull off as well as inner fender liners but it is not overly complicated looking.

@ASD Dad

Hey ASD Dad, did you buy an aftermarket bumper (rear?)?  Were you satisfied?  What was your source?  I'm only a little concerned about the chrome thickness and rust popping up in a couple years.
