Laharview Farm Camper Build

Recommended Posts

I will be converting a 2015 NV2500 HD SV High Top with the V-8, tow/tech package, and rear windows.  I believe I have spent more time reading about insulation then doing the actual job.

My approach is use Fat Mat Rattle Trap Extreme as the first layer, R Max in the walls and 1" closed cell foam in the ceiling (lots of white Gorilla tape), cover with Refletix, then the original panels.  Have not quite decided on the interior finish.  Would like to use thin wood strips or possibly gray laminate flooring held in place with MDF at the seams.

Will finish the ceiling next week after the maiden voyage to a tractor show in Ellensburg, WA.  This will be the first pull over Snoqualmie Pass towing a flat bed and a 1940 John Deere Model "B" (6,000 pounds).

I also added 3/4"  ENT conduit along the drivers side.  I used a 1-1/2" hole saw and then split a piece of vacuum hose and put it over the edge of the hole.

This morning I installed a solid window in the slider made by CR Lawrence.  I bought it on-line at Sears and found there price $80 lower than anywhere else.

It was an 8 hour job.  The first 7-3/4 hours I spent over thinking how to cut the hole (die grinder, plasma cutter, ?), 10 minutes to make the cut , and 5 minutes to install the window.

I ended up using a good pair of offset tin snips.  I rough cut the hole to within 1/2" and then went around for the finish.  The cut is made right to the second layer of sheet metal.  Had to trim the door handle plastic a bit.  My Son assisted holding the window in.  This was a simple installation and I will now order the window for right behind the drivers door.  Going to get the one that opens.

Dang, nice work. It's going to be awesome. Wish the NVP was that simple to do the wall and ceiling insulation job in. That sure would make the HVAC performance and sound insulation top notch....!

I’ve had a few “8 hour” jobs like that. I’ve also had the 5 minute jobs that turned into 8-hour jobs. Hard to find the balance sometimes. The insulation looks super clean. Nice job. Is the conduit for future wire fishing, or do you have immediate plans for it?

Hi All,

The last photo shows the window installed.  These are a match to the factory windows.  I will post a interior view tonight.

The conduit is for future needs.  I will terminate it with a junction box at each end for now.  It was an easy install while the walls were opened up and I have not flushed out my final design yet so spares can come in handy.

Loading up for the first road trip tonight.  This will be the first NV to haul to a tractor show in our area.

Here is the interior of the slider window.

I also ran  20 Amp 120 Volt AC cable from under the hood to the interior.  For now it will run a small ceramic heater at night.  I found a plugged hole under the passenger seat that I could install a 3/4" Seal Tight/Cable grip fitting with no body modifications.  Will work for this winter and easy to remove.  The other end of the cord is by the battery.  Also got Skeeter Beaters so the front windows can be down a bit at night.  They fit over the NV window rain guards.

Thanks for the pic’s, laharview. Please keep them coming. Are you installing a vent fan in the roof?

Have not decided on a roof vent yet. Going to add the drivers side window with one that opens. Hope with it and the front windows down a bit it will be enough ventilation.

Hopefully that works for you. I wasn’t sure about adding a fan, but I really appreciate my Fantastic fan. Easy to install and relatively inexpensive. How much time/how often are you going to spending in your truck?

Hi Chris,

Did you install a 12 volt or 120 volt fan?  Could you send a model number?  I am concerned with cutting holes in the roof unless really needed but now is the time to do it.  Most trips will be long weekends with a couple week long.  Planned on hitting the occasional hotel to stretch out and find a pool.

Thanks, Mike

Hey Mike-

Fan-Tastic Vent 6000RBTA Off White Automatic Vent

Sold by: Amazon.com LLC
$232.60.

I picked the 12V three speed, rain-sensor, auto-open. It really is a great fan. I was a bit concerned about cutting into a brand new vehicle, but I made sure to prime everything and used stainless bolts and really good sealant. So far, no issues, no leaks.

I have a 2K inverter w/ 120V available, but I didn’t want to have to power it up every time I wanted to use the fan. Also, I would have switched the fan differently knowing what I know now. I’ll elaborate if you get the fan.

I have a high roof model with 4x4.  Because I go off road (under tree branches) I didn't want anything on the roof.  I installed vented side windows and ordered an extra driver's side rear screen then attached a portable Fan-Tastic fan to the extra screen with plastic blocking the non fan area.  This set up draws air in from my other windows but can be easily removed.  I can send a picture if needed.

Thanks KMG. I like keeping the top smooth after this weekend at Bumping Lake. Going to copy you. Here is a shot at the top of Chinook Pass. Bike rack worked fine. Going to install Gray LV plank flooring on the interior now that I have the fan issue solved.

Nice job!  I like the color choice.  Is it attached in the middle or only at the ends under the trim strips?

Hi KMG,

I attached at every rib with 3/4" #8 pan head SS screws and made the seams at every other rib with 1" #8 screws.  The stock is 4' long so every other rib is about 34".  Found this stock at McLendon's after a long search and it is a great match.

Cabinets  are next!

Today I installed two pieces of aluminum stock as bed support rails. Trimmed and drilled the factory panels to fit. Also ordered the drivers side vented CRL window.post-1155-0-83064200-1445738905_thumb.jpgpost-1155-0-59736200-1445738949_thumb.jpg

Close up of the bed support. Used a 1/4" lag from the bottom to secure.  Got the bed platform finished but the rain set in before I could get a photo.  I ended up making it 54" long and 69" wide.  The thought is get a foam Full size mattress and trim off 5".

Installed the drivers side CRL vented window today.  Easy install once you get over the fear of cutting up a new truck.  I drilled a couple of starter holes and used right cut and left cut tin snips (red and green handle).  We are having record rains today so had to rig a tarp because the high top NV doesn't fit in my shop.

Also finished the bed platform.  Went shopping for a foam pad and learned that the local mattress shop makes custom sizes for RV's and boats.  So I ended up getting a custom cut real mattress with a cover for the same price as a piece of foam!

On to cabinets and bed platform doors/drawers.
