Rust Management

Recommended Posts

I thought it might be beneficial to start a post to share ideas related to efforts to minimize rust as well as to document parts of the van that may be more susceptible to rust versus others.  Personally I can say I am pretty naive when it comes to cars rusting and best practices to minimize related damage so unfortunately I can't start the thread with any insights but hope others will share and also document issues.  Thanks,

I'm sure you are mainly concerned with issues with the factory paint job. But I want to jump in early and state the obvious so we have it out of the way.

If you drill or cut the painted metal on your NV, prime the raw edges immediately. Don't say I'll do it later or dismiss a small drilled hole as no big deal. Keep that can of primer handy and use it without fail.

Where do you live that you are so concerned about rust?  An area that uses salt and or literally on the ocean??

If you're in a salt area there is literally nothing you can do.  Rust is going to happen and it's only a matter of when.  If you get a door ding and are missing a speck of paint that can be enough for the cancer to start.  The best thing you can do, is try to keep it clean, which means spraying it down after a snow.  For the undercarriage, there is very very little you can do, try to keep it clean as well.  There is a lot of snake oil out there, don't buy it.  Wheels, I would always rub down with motor oil when clean and would have positive results.

If you are in a salt area and drive winters for the next 5 years your going to be rusty on the underside, nothing you can do my friend.
