Still looking, researching and planning for an NV

Recommended Posts

So there I am, looking at Quigleys and thinking I should buy an E350, or a Transit, or something to fit my current needs plus future needs of more kids, more stuff, and a more reliable vehicle.

First of all: I use vehicles in ways the mfg never thought of. I once put 18 Landscape timbers into a two door Cavalier....somehow they fit. The same car ended up with a landmower ratchet strapped to the roof between the Thule rack, with a trailer attached with about twenty fence panels and a set of Bobcat tracks. Safe to say, I push the limits of stuff with vehicles.

Even my current Caravan has become more of a pickup truck than family hauler. I've moved more people more times in that thing than when I owned a pickup. I love having a van, and am pissed I ever sold my 87 Ram Van years ago.

So while the wife and I are looking at Honda Pilots and Suburbans and Excursions, I mention that the NV is massive and would have better leg room than the regular fullsive vans, without the pretensions of Honda or a Suburban. She says she's stuck on it and wants one now, which I'm fine with....until she tells me that it looks like a Titan and a Cube had a love child....seriously. I haaaaaate the Cube. Such an ugly vehicle. Stll better than that damn hamster car or a Jeep(Fiat) Renegade. Ugh.

So here I am. Hopefully will be an owner of an NV soon, until then doing my due diligence by researching what will cart my family around for years to come.

A few questions for you guys and gals:

Why don't they put a Diesel into it? The Titan is getting one. Why not the NV? I wonder  how tough putting a Diesel into the NV would be?

Does anyone know of a front hitch for the NV? With such a tall nose, I'd like to put a couple of bicycles up front and out of the way of the rear doors or having to climb up top.

4x4....It's obviously the Titan Chassis....why not 4x4? Yeah, Quigley can do it for 11 grand, but why won't Nissan do it from the factory? Demand I assume.

Anyways, HI!!!!!!

One guy on here had a custom front hitch made for his bikes.  Quick search should find it, this site isnt that big!  They mounted it to where the massive tow hooks are up front.

Nissan has the diesel and a much better new V8.  Will they come to the NV?  Anybody's guess.  There supposedly is a Cummins NV being driven at the Cummins facility as a shuttle van so it most definitely could be done.  I highly doubt the motor and tranny would just drop in though and I have no clue where you'd find either since they have been out for one month!  Have to search the country for a new XD that got rear-ended and totaled I guess.

4x4 I would guess is demand.  These things were designed as commercial vehicles first.  We dont have the same dealer network as normal Nissan and we dont have the same Customer Service contacts as normal Nissan.  Even if you own the Passenger, you still call Nissan Commercial and you still need to find an NV certified dealer for service work.

The thing is, these things are so cheap you can deck one out at Quigley and still be much cheaper than a 'Burb or similar.  Even at full retail and top spec NVP SL you're looking at $52,000 for a Quigley with a full warranty.  A similar 'Burb would run $60K and still be a half-ton chassis.  You cant buy the 2500 'Burb new anymore, only govt agencies can buy it (Law Enforcement, Fire, etc).

Braaprider may have found just what you are looking for at Ken Garff Nissan in Salt Lake. See his Buying V6 or V8 posts and pictures under on topic lounge. It is probably an Advance 4x4 conversion, but you can see what a NVP conversion will run you. We also are curious. There are several Quigley owners and one Advance owner on this site.

This particular NVP may be a 2015 model, but they all hold their value well.

No 4x4 because they can't even produce enough now of what you have.  If you had ever seen the place in the plant where they manufacture these, running a full two shifts, you'd see that expansion in it's present place isn't too feasible.  Heck, I'm having enough trouble just getting NV Cargo vans, I literally could use another 20 right now and can't get them.  It's a good problem!!  :)

If demands was that high they could expand or run an extra shift (unless those are 2 @ 12 hours).  I live very close to the BMW plant and they run 24/7 to keep up and have expanded 3 times in the 11 years I have been here.  These are not small expansions either, they are multi million dollar huge expansions bringing in hundreds of jobs.

Since owning mine I still have seen ONE other NVP local to me (30+ miles in any direction) and he bought his after seeing mine.  There are 3 NVP's being used for company shuttles and two for hotel shuttles.  I am seeing more and more Cargos.  When I take mine in for service the dealer usually has one or two NVP's available if not more at all times.  They had a blue one for so long that the dealership ended up buying it for a shuttle!

The amount you see on the road is so variable depending on area, I honestly can't go more than two days without seeing an NVP here in Charlotte, and see at least a dozen if not more NV's just coming and going to work, not even counting when I'm out driving around.

You have to remember two more things though.  One, this is a Japanese company through and through.  They are inherently very conservative, change and modification can come very slow.  Decisions simply take time.  Second, the whole commercial division within Nissan operates as a separate entity and is still growing with staff as well.  The knowledge base of how to run this operation in this country is still in it's infancy as well.  That staff (nissan employees) assists dealers, allocates vehicles, signs on new commercial dealers........just on and on and on.  It is not easy to just start hiring people and putting all the other things in place to handle that load.  For better or worse, and in my case I think it's better, it will take time to put everything in place to handle increased production.  You can't just expand the plant and start kicking out more vehicles.

Our numbers are fantastic and you will see more of our vehicles on the road, we truly have the best product on the road for many people's needs.  You will also see variations on product offerings, I just wouldn't hold your breath as to when.

If they release the new V8 or even the Cummins I'd strongly consider trading mine in already!
