Close to warranty expiration?

Picked up our van from the dealer after leaving it there for a repeat of the 30,000 mile service. (See TPMS saga if interested). Service also included the 35,000 mile oil change. No charge.

 

When I dropped it off 2 days ago (had the luxury of not needing it), the service manager and I did a walk around and reviewed all issues since we took ownership in 9/2012. This included

the intermittent check engine light,

the intermittent check gas cap warning,

the broken glove box latch,

the left rear door latch (enables the door to swing to the side) got stuck inside the door. (Able to pull it out at the time.) This may be the same latch involved in an earlier recall.

And, after I mentioned that I greased the sliding door rollers and cleaned the track because the track sounded gritty, he found that the sliding door gets slightly hung up when fully opened.

 

Check engine light left no code. Unresolved?

Gas cap replaced. Leak detected and this may have been the reason for the check engine light.

Glove box latch replaced.

Rear door latch replaced. (Second time?)

Upper roller on sliding door greased.

 

All covered under warranty.

 

So, what is my point. We probably should do this at every service. Definitely as you near the end of the warranty to establish a record. The glove box latch and rear door latch are either cheap and/or poorly designed and may fail again.

Hello.  Just called Jim Click in Tucson, asking if I should have a (delayed) 30k service done.  I had bot my 2013 nv2500 sv high roof van used from CarMax, with around 28000 on it.  They told me it had been prepped and serviced for sale.  It is now at about 34500.  Spoke to Pete over phone who said the 30k service would cost about $780.  He said if nothing else, I should do the oil change ($49), the coolant ($189), and the transmission ($139).  He said a free inspection would be included, due to it being near end of 36k warranty. When I mentioned gas door hinge loose and USB dash port doesn't seem to work for more than a few seconds, he said I would have to pay about $122 an hour, 'cos those would not be covered in the free inspection.  I made appointment for just oil change for this Tuesday.   What say you, forum members?

The $780 quote is based on Jim Click's Service Maintenance Schedule, not the service manual in your glove box. Go with what Pete "if nothing else" recommended. My 30k service included a brake system flush ($90) not coolant flush. I was told the coolant flush could wait and be checked at next service(s). Truck Trend had an article on recommended service that is worth reading.

 

The USB port either works or doesn't. Take all your cords and show Pete it doesn't work. If he insists on charging you to check it out, speak to the "new" service manager and if they do nothing contact Nissan Customer Services.

 

The gas door hinge and seat belt issue may fall under wear and tear.

 

It looks like Frank, the service manager, no longer works there. There also doesn't appear to be a commercial manager. You may want to call Jeff Hovelson, service adviser to see if he is working when you bring your NV in. He is easy to work with and will take the time to see what your NV needs.

The Truck Trend article is Routine Maintenance -Shop Class.

 

I looked at the manual and "replace brake fluid" is recommended. OEM (blue) coolant does not have to be replaced until 105,000 miles or 7 years per the service manual. Skip this if it is blue and replace the brake fluid and transmission fluid. 30k service also calls for replacing the wiper blades ($25); if needed have them installed. Saves having to crawl on the hood.

 

Continue to ask your ?s here so we can all learn.

 

Let Jeff know the guy with the Silver Sportsmobile, or better yet Frank Calvillo told you to ask for him when you were getting your battery checked.

 

11/29 If they do flush your coolant and they put in the blue coolant, the manual recommends doing it again after 75,000 miles or 5 years.
