Going to be on my 3rd radio, anybody change with a Tech Pkg?

Recommended Posts

So my first radio died quickly and they gave me a new one a few months ago.  Well now the new one is wigging out!  Lights like to flash on and off at night which is distracting to say the least and today it is totally mute.  No sound period from any source - radio, nav, phone, satellite.  Already called dealer and he said they can swap it out again but this is getting annoying.

Anybody switch to a nice aftermarket unit?  Since I have the Tech Pkg I would want to keep the steering wheel controls and bluetooth controls.  I HAVE to keep the backup camera, the rearward visibility in these is horrible and I am always hooking up to our camper.

I've done audio upgrades for decades including competition level stuff but these days I want to just keep it simple.

My screen cracked when I was camping at Glazier National Park.  I too need a aftermarket replacement and want to keep my tech package features also.  My Nissan dealer said they would swap out the unit for an exact replacement.  No Thanks!  The factory unit is junk.

Well spoke to two techs at Crutchfield and Axxess.  They arent sure if their steering wheel control box will work with the NV or not, they havent tested it.  I hate losing steering wheel controls.  They also told me that there is no way to adapt the factory backup camera into a new head unit, they dont sell adapters.  I havent taken the radio out to see what the connector is to see if something could be made up or not.  I dont want to wire a new camera in when I have one!

There was a long ago post from Boston that the oem radio was swapped for "Apple Car" and Pioneer. No details except he gave away the oem radio to someone on this site. Typical of many posts, there was no follow up.

CNET has done a review of the Apple and Android versions. My take is that they do nothing more than a smart phone. Pioneer may, however, be a better unit. I think there were some previous posts but no mention if they went ahead with the Pioneer swap and install.

Gman - I have used those adapters in the past, have you verified it works with the NV steering wheel controls?  My radio sound came back on over the weekend but was out a couple days.  Dealer still plans on replacing since I take a video whenever something intermittent happens so they can diagnose easier.

No I can't yet, it is just one that was recommended.  I will be trying soon, still saving some pennies.

Just wanted to update this...  I AM STILL WAITING ON MY RADIO!!  Seriously.  They ordered it when I called in on Feb 25th.  I just got back from a week long camping trip (over 1000 miles with no issues) and called this morning to see what was going on.  No update or ETA on getting it in.

Thankfully the radio has worked and only freaked out once with the light show again.

I have not found a replacement yet, figured if they want to keep replacing it for free I'll let them.

Following. I am also looking to upgrade my head unit.
Im unsure what level of audio package i have in my nv, but i have what looks like a stock level head unit ( orange LCD, large center vol/power knob). I usually upgrade to whatever premium headunit was available at the time, but after the fact and usually second hand. In the same fashion, i was going to upgrade to the OEM nav unit 25915ZT56A but it sounds like a good handful of you guys are having bad experiences with it.
Also dont want to lose the steering wheel controls, my local installer says they can get a Pioneer AVIC to work with oem controls, yet to bee seen/proven.
