Awning & Kayak Rack

Recommended Posts

Bought a 2015 NV2500 SV High Roof last week and have started converting into a Camper/Tow Rig.

Looking for information on a Awning (maybe roof rack combo) supplier. And some sort of Kayak rack that could be operated from ground level.

I have started installing Fatmat Rattle Trap and have a CRL slider window on the way.  Thinking about the CRL drivers side window but want to see how I like the slider window first.

I high roof van with a kayak rack that you can use from the ground?  I'd like to see that!  I am still trying to figure out the easiest way to carry kayaks on a low roof.

I seriously would like to see suggestions... if it works on a high roof it has to work on a low as well!

I don't know if you are handy, know how to weld, etc.  But I'm positive with a little creativity I could get an Adrian Steel drop down to hold a kayak.

Daydreaming520 posted a link for a NV high top home build video. The build included a Fiamma awning with side walls that seemed to be able to withstand quite a bit of wind. He also had a custom built rack to attatched the awning, solar panels and whatever else he put up there. He had a ladder attatched to the left (?) rear door.

There are Thule and Yakima side loaders for bikes and boards, not sure about kayaks, but they most likely would only work on standard tops.

Doubt this would work, but SMB built a high top NV with board mounts on the interior, driver's side. They also had a shower at the rear, same side. Nissan, there is a need for an extended van...

How much weight can they easily handle? I have to think even a fiberglass ladder would be much lighter than a large kayak. Some tandems can be 75+ pounds. That would be a cool idea if it worked.

EDIT: Found this but would need modified to work on a rack that fits on the NV. http://www.rackwarehouse.com/malone-mpg351-telos-kayak-load-assist-module.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwvJqvBRCL77m2-uKczsIBEiQAkx8VjPeHYcKmEzg0jHFJyOH33NPOs8nlbWpTxPfvu58hhy0aAs5J8P8HAQ

Thanks.  Was looking for bolt on but may be in store for a bit of fabrication.  I remember in the 70's seeing a boat loading system for canopies that worked from the rear.  The NV has some nice mounting points installed.  I'll post photos of what I build.

Thanks, Mike

An awning is next on my list of upgrades. Just need to find a good one that will fit and not break the bank.

Hi SilverNV,

Check out my "Laharview Farm Camper" post under Conversions.  Here I show the installation of a Fiamma awning.  It's on the top end of price however it works and fits great, high quality, and i am pleased with there service.  You can order direct from them.
