From the original comment, I assume that it was just placed over the carpet. The molded foam that is on vantred would probably make it so you would need to tear out the original carpet to do it.

I'm thinking that the reversible option is both cheaper and less risky.

I want to do this as well. So much easier to clean than carpet. Where did you get the rubber?

I bought the mat from American van. Unfortunately, it has holes where I do not want them, which are intended for some cargo tie-downs. It is also a few inches too short to be able to tuck it under the plastic in the front of passenger area. I need to send it back and will probably end up cutting my own.
