Mid rear windows HELP!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all I'm back, after fighting with the Nissan dealer for 2 months. I finally got the mid rear windows installed in my NV 1500. Now here's the problem they took it to some aftermarket place and returned it to me. With the inside of the windows without a frame all the cuts are Sharp and edges are ragged. Then it's bolted through and they left the bolts hanging out. It looks as if these have been cut off with bolt cutters. I have complain to the Nissan dealer so here's my problem. Nobody seems to know what to do to fix it. I use my van for dog walking and pet sitting. Right now it is unsafe to put animals in as for all the sharp points and edges in the back. On top of that the vehicles brand new and I'm horrified that they would return it to me in this condition. Really the problem is how do I fix it or how do I tell them to fix it. I have been looking for ways to find a frame for it. The stock windows for this are out on backorder and nobody knows when they will be in. So in the meantime I need to use my van for work. I live in Long Beach California so any ideas anyone. I could really use some help guys. I tried calling a van conversion place. They seemed very unhelpful and said they could help me maybe next week. The problem is I use this van everyday for work. So any ideas or help would be great. Other than reaming the Nissan dealer which I've already doing. I need to find a way to make it work in the meantime. Help

Caryn,

That is a bad situation. We really need some photos (overall shot and some close ups if possible)to help us provide a solution. You need these photos anyway to help document what was done.

Sounds like you will be having this botched up work replaced as soon as better windows are available. Since the dealership that messed this up is apparently unable to provide you with even a temporary fix, I'd personally have little confidence in them going forward.

Post some photos and then pick from the solutions. We'll try to keep it simple, inexpensive, and temporary.

If you are new to posting photos on the site, you'll need to be using the full version and not the mobile version of the website.

CR Laurence Automotive Products has what you need, plus check Laharview's conversion posts for installation. We have the vented version on both sides, while he has one of each. They should fit the holes they made. More $ however.

Nissan is not likely to help with the above, but take your van to a reliable auto glass business and see if they can fabricate a molding and/or reinstall them. OR, buy some of the same fiber board used on the inside of your van to make a frame around the windows. Out of sight out of mind. Nissan may go with this. If not, do one or both anyway and file a complaint with Nissan commercial to get reimbursement.

These are the biggest pics it will let me upload from my phone. I have the vented windows in the front sides. Evidently those are not the same size. Or that's what they told me at the dealer. This is all turned into a horrible nightmare. Don't buy your car from Cerritos Nissan. The general manager is super nice. But the sales people don't know squat.

Windows all around? The windows should be the same size, right side and left side, but not front to rear. It took me awhile to realize this on our van. The problem may be that you ordered the windows, but not the trim, thinking or being told the windows came with trim.

It may look worse up close, but how is this a hazard for your dog passengers? A simple fix would be to find caps for each bolt. Go to a hardware or auto parts store to see what will thread on. This will give you time to find a trim piece. If there is a NVP on the lot, check out the trim and order the part(s) if the caps don't work. Go to their auto body manager, he will know what parts you need.

What happened to you motorcycle photo?

If you can find something to cover each bolt, try to file or sand the worst jagged areas of the cutout. Then mask off the area around the window and paint it with bed liner. It comes in a spray can or you can brush (water soluble) it on. It is thick and will fill in any gaps. I used this on the step into our van that wore thin.

First, given the lack of workmanship on this job I'd be checking these windows with a water hose to see if they are even properly sealed.

Then I'd be checking to see that the cut was primed. If you have any bare metal showing, get some automotive primer and use an artists brush or Qtip to cover it all. Bare metal will rust quickly.

The installer should have first used an edge guard around the opening to not only protect you from the rough metal edge but to also provide a more finished look. It's a mute point now but you can look at trimlock.com to see examples.

pro-dec.com will give you some ideas about decorative covers.

But for cheap and temporary (and readily available), I'd be trying to fit some plastic wire nuts over the bolts.

Rad has the right idea - check with a glass shop to see if they can cover this up after the fact.

Or, go to Home Depot and look for Armacell 2 in. x 30 ft. R-1 Foam Insulation Tape - - or something like it.

Might fit the cheap and temporary criteria. You just need something that is thick enough to protect and flimsy enough to easily remove later.

You are in the heart of the country's automotive custom shops, so a busy van conversion shop is a good one. Follow through with that first  while doing other insignificant cost alternatives first. No good shop in CA does not have a waiting list, and one week is not bad. (you should have waited for the stock - the Quality is Why they are on backorder - now your perfect van is defaced.)

As a Mfg. Engineer, 3 quotes is a minimum, so you hear enough b.s. and cross check what each says until you get a good answer. By the time you get 3 quotes, you better know where you want to go and how to get there. All suggestions are worthy so far. Also,, temporarily, get some silicone sealant and put around widow edge and nuts until you get better solutions mentioned. Safety first! A small tube is about $4, but Home Depot has larger tubes that you will need a metal applicator. Get black color silicone and that may be all you need for about $20 complete :-)

I hope that was not Cerritos Nissan or Downey Nissan :-(
