2016 NVP 3500HD SL Oil Consumption Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to Nissan and to this forum. I've owned Toyota vehicles up to this point. We recently purchased a used 2016 NVP 3500 HD SL that only had 40,837 miles on it. I purchased it 5/12/21. On 5/22/21 we took it for a road trip to Florida from New Hampshire. it was approx 3,000 miles round trip. During the round trip I had to add approx 10 quarts of oil. I brought it to the Nissan dealer we bought it from the next day after getting home. They ran tests and couldn't find any leaks or issues. We are currently performing a 1,000 mile oil consumption test. Anyone experience an issue similar to this?

Not that I recall. Also, this forum has never generated much interest, so may may want to check the Titan forum or search oil consumption issues for the 2016 and older Titans.

Any warranty left? Or do you know if Nissan ever worked on this van for oil issues. You may have some recourse if the warranty expired recently.

Let us know what you find...

Thanks for the reply radin2son! I confirmed with Nissan directly that it is still under the 5 year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Expires 8/17/22. We also got an extended warranty when we purchased it. Carfax doesn't show any issues at all with this vehicle. Regular services items are the only items reported.

Here is my Dipstick Comparison from the day we started the consumption test to after driving 711 miles last weekend. Left is from 6/3/21 and right is from this morning 6/7/21. I called them this morning and they said to keep driving till we hit 1,000 miles.

Nissan is deep into this now and well past the initial warranty date. Don’t hesitate to contact Nissan Commercial customer service, or whatever they call themselves, if the dealer tells you your initial warranty has expired. (Unless your extended warranty is better.) You now have an established history.

Unless this has changed, you may have to contact Nissan Commercial, not online passenger cars. You have to call. You may have to make repeated calls and may not get the same person. Document your calls. Nissan will assign a number for records. The system can be frustrating but has worked for most of us, myself included.

There are threads for this. Some rants, including my own.

Went to the Nissan dealer yesterday. They determined it burned just under 1 quart of oil in 1,000 miles. They said this was within normal specs. I argued with them, that this is burning more than 1 quart of oil. They are going to submit the documentation of this issue to Nissan and call me today with the next step. He said they may want you to bring it in and we will be checking other components, but he said you may need to drive it another 1,000 or 2,000 miles before we can get evidence that it's burning more than 1 quart of oil. So basically I need to waste more of my time , fuel, and wear on the vehicle driving it thousands of miles for an issue with a vehicle they sold us. That is unfair and not right. I couldn't find anywhere where in the owners manual where it says an exact amount of oil consumption is normal. All it says is " It is normal to add some oil between oil maintenance intervals or during the break-in period, depending on the severity of operating conditions." Some oil in my opinion would be a 1/2 a quart or less between the recommended oil change interval, not 1 quart every 1,000 miles. Both the service manger and sales manger said they would work with us to make it right. Sales Manager said he would trade us back the 2017 Toyota Sienna we sold them, but it may not be an even trade, meaning we may need to pay to get it back. Definitely not satisfied with ether of their answers, but I'm at their mercy with a used vehicle. At least they confirmed that it is still under warranty. The problem is proving it to Nissan that there is something wrong , so we can get a new engine.

I contacted Nissan direct, and explained the situation. They gave me a case number and the regional office is going to call me by the end of the business day tomorrow.

I hope someone with more engine knowledge jumps in. Used or not a 2016 shouldn’t be an oil burner.

Any chance, the dealer has service records? Are you using synthetic?

Their next step likely will be to contact the regional rep, so wait and see. Depending on their response, your next step will be to file a complaint by calling Nissan Commercial customer services. Initially, they will contact the dealership and rep. Keep good documentation if the dealer’s service manager and rep don’t give you anything in writing. Be pushy and demanding.

Just drive it the way they tell you, preferably in writing, in the mean time. Get as much info on normal oil consumption as you can for the older Titan V8.

I bought a 2017.5 Nissan Rogue SL AWD with exactly 32,999 miles in December 2020.  It is a certified pre owned vehicle.  I got the first oil change at the dealership.  No mention of low oil, said everything was fine.  On 07/04/2021 while driving out of town, I got a low oil pressure, stop engine NOW warning. I pulled over and there was no oil on the dipstick, at all.  My son-in-law brought me oil, it took almost 5 quarts.  I drove it home and called Nissan the next day.  Nissan told me they could not find anything wrong with it.  They changed my oil & told me to come back in 1k miles.  At 1k miles, oil was still full.  Before going on a short road trip, I checked my oil and it was so oil, it was barely on the dipstick.  And the oil was tar black and smelled horrible.  I made a video of me checking the oil, took a photo of the dipstick, odometer and oil change sticker.  The SUV almost ran out of oil in exactly 1,357 miles into the oil change.  Nissan has me scheduled to come in tomorrow.  After reading your comments, I am beyond concerned.  I have had exactly 2 oil changes and put just over 10k miles.  I cannot imagine the damage that has been caused by first running it out of oil and then running it super low on oil again.  I will post what I learn tomorrow.
