Beep after stopping at a stoplight

Recommended Posts

Only NVP SLs have front sensors and fog lights and Nissan designed a SL front bumper, so it is possible they will redesign the bumper. (If you can live with a frameless plate and reduced (?) beeping, keep your SL and have them install a redesigned bumper when available...)

There is at least one NVP in the gallery with a front license plate. PM him to see if he has a SL with a similar problem. Anyone else with a SL and front plate, chime in...

No one has mentioned that you can turn it off like the rear sensors when towing etc.; so can Nissan add a switch to turn it off when driving? (WHY NOT USE AND WIRE IT TO THE EXISTING REAR SONAR SWITCH?) Or if they have to disable it completely, see if they will add a front wireless camera etc. at their expense.

I've had mine for a year now and am still getting random beeps, mostly when stopped at a red light.  Initially, I found that I got a lot of beeps right after a car wash and thought it was water.  That is still the case when I get my car wash, so I make sure to wipe them dry.  But, it doesn't beep as much or at all when I drive in the rain...go figure.

I do have the front license plate mentioned.  I am starting to notice a pattern when it does beep at the red light...it seems that it'll beep most when a white car passes by in the intersection.  Although, DanD mentioned that the sensor will detect slight movement of the license and I can say that I've noticed beeps when cars drive by pretty fast causing a lot of wind turbulence.

Mine does not beep nearly as much as the video post on this thread, so I've learned to live with the ocassional beeps.  :-(

One last thought or two, then I'm worn out. Again assuming there is nothing wrong with the sensor, and they can only be installed so the clips fit, can they be installed upside down. Does it matter?

Since the sensors are outsourced and probably produced in multiples too big to fathom for a variety of vehicles and manufacturers, what are the chances for variations in the plastic? The sonar works fine, but what if there is a slight flaw that minimizes seeing the license plate? This may be why no one else has a problem as severe as DanD. Can Nissan shim the inside sensors to point slightly more to the outside?

I believe there is a difference in right and left sensors (at least they asked me this when the outside rear was replaced), perhaps inside and outside. Did Nissan try different sensors, different locations? You would think so...

Thought we would give this group an update.

1.  Nissan is still working on an engineering fix.

2.  They have asked us to get new license plates to see if this fixes the issue.

3.  We took the licence plate off (left the frame on) and it still beeps occasionally.

4.  We took the whole license plate frame off last Thursday and it still has not beeped.

Does anyone out there not have a license plate/frame on their car and still has the beeping issue?

My van also does this when hard braking or hitting a driveway lip too hard. Its a bother to think about and have to turn off the sonar from the console, but actually helpful to know its more common than we thought and that your van is'nt exactly melting or breaking because of it.

We've had the same beeping issues with our 2016 SL. I did what some others have suggested and removed the frame, then drilled some new holes in the plate to mount it to frame mounting holes. It very rarely beeps without a reason now.

Just bought our 2016 NV passenger SL, and I gotta say that the beeping when stopping at red lights or stop signs is outright annoying. I thought that this was only supposed to beep in intervals when you started to get close to something, and then beep faster as you got closer (This is how the sensors in my expedition worked). It seems like the moment I put the car in reverse to back out of the driveway, and there is nothing behind it, the beep is there. I was wondering if there was any update on this issue, any suggestions. I have an appointment with the dealer to change the oil on Saturday and was going to bring this up to them. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should tell them?

I have a license plate frame installed by the dealer, and will try to remove it to see if the beeping stops.

I don't think I ever updated this group on the resolution.  After some months, Nissan came up with a new license plate frame for the front bumper.  Although the car occasionally beeps, it's no where near what it was before.  The Nissan dealership should be aware of this change because the Nissan corporate office handled the new frame.

Update

So, I went out to the Van and saw that my front license plate was bent in the upper left corner pushing it and the license plate holder out far enough to cause the constant beep sound. I took the holder off, and left the plate, and the beeping persisted. I took the plate off completely, and the beeping was gone!! I actually put my trash cans out in front of and behind the van to test the sensors out, and i actually heard what they are supposed to sound like when they are working properly.

Crazy to think that the plate being out about half an inch caused the issue.

On another note, This message is for DanD + Carrie... what was the issue with the passenger seatbelt light? Mine doesn't seem to go out at all, unless the seat belt is being used. But if theres no one in the seat it stays on, is this the same issue you were having?

The dealers we have taken the van too have insisted the safety belt is working properly, even though it doesn't match what is in our manual.  Ours goes off after about 20 seconds of driving.

As far as the sensors go, our van doesn't beep much anymore since they replaced our license plate holder.  If it does start to beep, I usually wipe the sensors down and check the license plate to make sure it's not bent.

My seat belt light for the passenger also stays on for about 20 seconds.  Dealer said it was normal and it hasnt bugged me since.

I still get random beeps now and then (and I have no front plate) but not enough to annoy me.  During the winter if we get ice it will beep constantly but that I can accept, the sensors are covered!  I will also get random beeps when backing up if I leave in a small 2" ball hitch I use for hauling around a landscape trailer.

We have a 2015 SL and it has the random beeping issue too...alongside an intermittently garbled rear camera screen.  We have never had a front license plate on our van.  Took the car to the dealer in December 2016 and they cleaned the sensors, checked for loose wiring, and did a software upgrade for the Nav system thinking the issues could have been inter-related but they all still persist.

I'm sitting in a (different) dealership this morning for general maintenance and I've asked them to look at this too, but I'm not holding my breath. Will be happy to post an update if I learn anything new.

Any update on what that dealership found?  I get random beeps but not nearly as many as others.  I also do Not have a front plate or holder for a plate.
