New Lug Nuts Don't Hold Hubcap Tight

Recommended Posts

I am dealing with the swollen lug nuts issue, and purchased some new nuts off Ebay that are supposed to fit.  They are the right style, how ever, the end that holds the wheel on is longer than the originals and don't hold the hub caps in place.

From what I can tell, the tip of the nut is what is holding the wheel on, and the flat part is only holding the hub cover on/tight.

Has anyone else had this problem?

(Edit to add that the old nut shown has the chrome shell removed.)

Thanks for the link. Did you just pry off the old washers?

BTW how did you remove the chrome shell from original lug?

Yes, I just took a small flat head and worked around the gap and worked them up and off.  It wasn't hard.

For the chrome shell. Hack .. spit ... pathoo on them.  I ended up taking a medium sized flat head, and punched it thru the top of the shell, and then pried the top back and try to and get the bit between the shell and the nut.  Then twisted and tried to split the shell. It was a pain.  Some came off easier than others.  But they all came off eventually.  I think I averaged 5 minutes a nut.  With appropriate beer brakes.
