Pioneer Avic-8100NEX

Recommended Posts

Currently that unit is probably the nicest, most feature rich model on the market

Not sure how it would work on the NV.

It has Apple car Play, and Android auto. This is the first generation of these apps and functionality will be limited initially. It will take a year or two for it to mature and get the bugs worked out.

I am reading the reviews, and they do run the full range.  I guess average is 3.5 to 4 stars.  From what I have been reading Pioneer is kinda slow for firmware upgrades, and updates.

Well I finally did more homework, and pulled the trigger on the Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX.  Save your self some cash and forget about the AVIC-8201NEX only change is the included backup cam,(you dont need it).

Retained all steering wheel controls

Used factory backup cam!

Used factory USB and AUX input!

Android Auto works great.

Nice clean install.

Will add some pics if anyone is interested.  I had it installed @ cartoys

Curious if the image quality of the back up cam is any better with the Pioneer screen. Not sure if the factory image is lackluster due to the camera or resolution of the nav unit. The factory works but could be better, my Ford and GM factory screens have much nicer image quality.

Image on the Nissan is terrible!  It has to be something with the NV specific parts.  I have had new Nissan loaners when my van was in for warranty work and they had excellent rear cameras.  One was a Rogue the other an Altima, both 2016 models.  The resolution or something is just really bad on the NV and on a vehicle where you cant see anything of value out the rear windows it would be nice to see a better image!

BTW the 8100NEX is on sale for a couple more days at Newegg.  Hundreds cheaper than elsewhere.  Just noticed when I looked up the model after reading this recent post.  I would be tempted to replace if the image is better with the factory camera on the Pioneer screen.  Would make hooking up our trailers much easier (camper and landscape trailer).

No, not any better.  Still fine for what it is needed for.

I would say a bit worse since the image is stretched to fill the screen.  Though I have not play with the camera settings much yet.

I would upgrade cam as well if you need more resolution, I'll snap a few pics of the rear view when I get to the airport parking lot.

I'm dying to switch to a CarPlay unit like this, but the rear-view camera has been the big thing holding me back. On this thread, Gman65 said that he was able to use the factory camera, which I'd also like to do (even though it stinks compared to virtually every other one I've used in other vehicles). A few questions:

1) Was there any kind of adapter required to use the factory camera? Any idea what connection type it is?

2) Any adapter required to maintain the factory USB/Aux-in?

3) Could I go with a less expensive Pioneer and still have it integrate so well? I don't need HD Radio, Nav, etc. as I really just want to use CarPlay for everything.

Thanks so much for any help - I've got a road trip with a van full of kids, and our factory system doesn't work at all half the time at this point.

Sorry not sure how they retained factory cam. As far as I know they used part USBIN1 it shows as nissan oe, and it maintains the factory look usb/aux.  Yes, just find the model that suits your need with carplay.

Thanks a lot. It seems like keeping the USB adapter will be fairly easy. Something like this will probably work: https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_70150_Axxess-AX-NISUSB-2.html

Anyone else have ideas on using the factory camera? That would be the game changer for me, as I'd feel confident enough to install myself if I could just use the existing camera, but installing a whole new camera is a little too intimidating.

Anyone know what is used to retain factory camera with pioneer head unit?

Sorry, just saw this.  I'm not sure, but mine was done at cartoys.  Maybe give them a call and ask.

BTW, this unit is capable of running 2 cameras. Which is what I did.

Had one installed in the front grille all the way up at the top looking down so I could see where my front bumper was when pulling into parking spots.

The unit allows you to switch back and forth between them.
