Ladder, and Door Tire Mount

Recommended Posts

Has anybody installed a door ladder or a spare tire door mount, on their rigs? I have found a black ladder for about 200 and a tire mount for under 100. I wanted to see if there are any issues besides not being able too open the doors all the way. I am going to install an extra tank in the spare area. I will be building a rack for the roof to house solar and shoot from. Racks are a little pricey, so modifying the ladder racks will have to be my option. Any feedback would be appreciated. Will start posting pics soon.

The ladder available from globalindustrial.com does not fit - it is too long and the top hangers do not align properly. I think it would fit a Sprinter just fine. The quality is okay but I couldn't modify it enough to be happy with it.

Most other rv type chrome ladders (available from a variety of sources) are made by Surco. I have one of these installed and it fits perfectly - no issues. Surco does make a black version. I was worried that the over the lip hangers would interfere with the weather seals but actually haven't had a problem through several downpours.

I think, if I had it to do over, I'd make my own with 80/20 components - but then I'd be looking at drilling more holes in the door.

I did make my roof rack out of 80/20 (inspired by Lee Blake / YouTube / Lee's Van Tour ). It cost about $800 total but I already had the taps, bits, guides, ball-head wrenches, etc. I really like the results and it creates no discernible roof noise.

I'll post a pic once the weather clears.

Thanks for the info. The Sprinter thing seems to be common whit racks and ladders. I did find one from Vantech that is supposed to be built for the NV. It comes in black and looks to need holes drilled. I will check out the you tube video. I can't afford to shell out 1,000- 2,000 on a rack so home made will do. The vantech ladder racks will bolt in factory locations and have 3 cross bars and hardware for about 300. I can connect and fill with expanded metal or slats. Time to warm up my welder. Thanks again
