  1. My granddaughter and I went visiting relatives in our 2014 V8 passenger van a few weeks ago. We did not have a load in the van -- even most of the seats were removed. We were traveling in states where the freeway speed limit was 80 mph. We exceeded that speed most of the time in order to keep up with the locals. Having been accustomed to getting 12 to 15 mpg in mixed town and city driving I expected an ugly result on our 2100 mile trip with my careful record keeping. To my amazement we burned 101 gallons of regular gas on the trip. A resounding 21 mpg! That was an unexpected bit of good news. Don
  2. I have been visiting this site since 2014 when we got our NV 3500 passenger van. It has proven to be very useful dealing with special issues with our van. For example, I am running lower than recommended tires pressures for a better ride since I don't carry heavy loads. That helps greatly reduce the characteristic stiff ride of this heavy duty vehicle. Second I spend a lot of time, including with dealers, struggling to reduce a very bother-some rattle in our sliding door. Finally got a solution from this site. Our dealer was unaware of the fix. There is an adjustment built into the the door allowing moving a pair of aligning pins in the door. After moving and greasing them my rattle is gone! A valuable thing; a site that yields such useful information. I plan to continue and to contribute if ever i have an insight.
  3. Our 2014 NV passenger van has developed an annoying creaking squeaking noise in the big sliding door. It probably comes from the mounting structure that carries the door open and closed. My dealer made a valiant attempt at curing it with grease silicone pads. I have sprayed the area with silicone lub all to no avail. Has anyone else had the problem? More importantly has anyone found a solution? Don
  4. it is the slider. It is getting louder and more annoying. Will consult the dealer next time I take it in for service.
  5. What started as a minor squeak in the door that I thought I had cured with some grease on the catches has now progressed to an increasingly loud rattle. It sounds like something has broken loose inside the door. Is the inside side of door panel easy to remove to take a look at the inside hardware? Any ideas other than taking it to the dealer? Don
  6. In a search for a softer ride on our passenger NV I tried lowering the tire pressure to 65 rear and 45 front. It makes a huge difference, but so far have not been able to retrain the pressure monitoring system to accept the new setting. It keeps reminding me what the pressures are. Two questions: since we don't carry heavy loads, what are the prices of lower pressure e.g. shorter tire life? And is there a way to teach the NV computer that the new pressure setting is OK?
  7. Just returned from an 800 mile trip with our NV3500 V8. Averaged 14.7mpg with little loading, but with headwinds and several elevation changes from 0 to 5000ft. Still have less than 4000 miles on the rig. Don
  8. I've dropped the tire pressure to 50 front and 70 rear with no complaints from the TPMS so far. There is a noticeable difference in the ride. Will consider gradually approaching 60 psi with the rears over time. Getting feedback from friends and neighbors not to get carried away with the tire pressure reduction even though I'm hardly carrying any load. While discovering many rave reviews for other vehicles, so far I cannot find which Bilstein shocks fit the NV3500. The 5100's came up specifically noting that they did NOT fit. Does anyone know a specific designation that fits? This has been a very helpful discussion. Thanks. Don
  9. As the owner of an NV3500 passenger van, I know that the ride is stiff because it has basically the suspension of a 1 ton truck. However, just in case it can be easily done, I have to ask if there is a reasonable way to make the ride a bit softer. On many roads the pavement is quite choppy making the ride of our van a bit tiring on longer trips. If there were something that could buffer the initial stiffness of the suspension and still not effect the load capacity of the van it could make a big difference in the riding comfort. Don
  10. This thread has been very interesting to me. I spent months with a local Mercedes dealer aiming to get a Sprinter. I got totally frustrated by the round and round experience. One happy day I wondered back over to the Nissan dealer who had our unit on their lot -- our 2014 NV passenger. Subsequently my enjoyment driving the NV was enhanced by learning that I had dodged a bullet, that I had suspected but not really know about, regarding servicing the Sprinter. Add to that the unexpected drop in gas, but not diesel, prices has added to my feeling quite pleased. So have only 2K miles on our NV, but it is so nice to motor around with that big old V8 turning over at just a bit above idle rpm. What a pleasant feeling indeed! It would be nice to get better mileage, but not worth the hassle of maintaining a complex Mercedes diesel. I will be following the progress of the new Ford vans over the next few years. They seem to be getting their act together. However I much prefer a more tried and true and simpler design of our NV to a new kid on the block Ford which is bound to have teething problems after such a huge change. Having used diesel tractors over the years I have an appreciation of how well diesels handle loading. The potential for a future Cummins diesel option remains interesting and was helped a lot by your observations. More NVs than Titans! Wow! Thanks all.
