jackei Posted January 19, 2018 (edited) Hello all, I wonder if this is normal, and if anyone has similar issue with me. I have a 2016 Passenger 3500 v8, and tow a 7000lbs trailer. It only happens when I tow the trailer up to the mountains. Even when I am driving slow and easy at 35mph, as soon as i went up a steep grade of about 1000 ft elevation, it gives a very strong and sharp burning smell outside from the engine bay, I can smell it immediately as I got off the van (can't smell it from inside). Both engine and transmission temp gauges shows normal temperature. All fluid are at good level. I also notice the fan goes on a lot when going uphill. Other than that everything else are normal. No smell when towing on flat road. Thanks :) Edited January 19, 2018 by jackei
ASD Dad Posted January 19, 2018 It's never happened on my 2015 towing a heavier camper through the NC and TN mountains up some steep grades. I am in 3rd gear at high rpm but that is normal for a gas motor. If there is no obvious fluid leaks or issues I would take it in for an inspection at the dealer. If the smell is sweet that is coolant. Burning or acrid smell is oil.
jackei Posted February 2, 2018 It is a very strong burning smell, like hot burning tar asphalt smell. I checked myself, no leaks, all fluid at good level. Bought it to Nissan dealer, and they couldn't find anything as well. It took them 2 days because they had to contact Nissan Corp to see what else they should look for. Left me clueless. :headscratch:
