Nissan is dropping the Cummins V8 from the Titan and Cummins will no longer produce it after Nissan stops using them.  Nissan is also dropping the regular cab Titan.

 

So much for the pipe dream of a diesel NV.  Honestly if the NV did get one it would be a small 4 cyl diesel for gas mileage for all the contractors.  This is still a commercial van first and passenger van second.  

 

With Nissan profit tanking and the large layoffs I am happy they still make the NV period.  If they do announce they are going to drop the NV I would seriously consider trading my 2015 for a new one to keep it around the family as long as possible.

I saw that sad news yesterday. I was really considering getting a Diesel Titan as a work truck since it seemed the Diesel NV would never happen. But now I don’t think I’d even do that..... hard to plan owning a vehicle for 10+ years when it was only produced for 4 and then ceased:(.

Nissan is in a bind at the moment. All automakers go through highs and lows, and Nissan will be fine, but there’s no doubt they are struggling around the globe right now.

Nissan USA seemingly has no clue what it wants to be. Why would you build a cargo van with 3 trim levels? The boss won’t be driving an SL van. And now the boss won’t be driving the Titan XD.

My guess is that the NV 1500 is the best seller. Only 2 trim levels? We see these all over the place. One is featured in a local TV ad for an HVAC business. Previously, they used Chevy vans.

I am wondering if they will still make the Titan HD with the gasoline V8. The Frontier has been unchanged since 2005 and the Frontier/Navarra (np300) for the rest of the world is beginning to be old now but we are still with the same old d40 Frontiers. Those suit me fine as I use them as a beat the tar out of them and go get a new one truck and dont want the smoother riding carlike trucks the other manufacterers are selling.

Honestly after working for Nissan for a number of years and helping with development of the Diesel Titan, I understood why they got rid of it.

They really didn't sell too well and I know they had a handful of drivetrain problems after seeing some myself and dealer techs telling me all about it.

The next 10 years will really tell us how Nissan is deciding to model their vehicles.

On 4/1/13, or thereabouts, Truck Trend posted an article about Chevy rebadging the larger NV similar to the NV 200. Although an April Fool's joke, it might have worked...

There also was an early, now very old rumor that Titan would become a rebadged Ram. What might have been... No mention of rebadged Frontier...

I’m quite sure the Ram/Titan thing was planned, and quite close to happening. Not sure what cancelled it, but it’s obvious that since then the Ram has been on a serious roll and Nissan is still trying to find its spot in the domestic truck wars. If there is a spot left to fill, that is.

I was under the impression that it fell through when Chrysler went bankrupt, had the partial gov bailout and merged with Fiat.

Saw photos of the “makeover” 2020 Titan. Still looks like a Ford. On our recent trip, we saw 3-4 new Titans. Only one was an XD. Didn’t see that many older ones either.

“Makeover” after 3 years or so. NVs have been around for 8 with no “makeover,” except the newer V8. If this has any significance, maybe Nissan should dump the Titan, and keep NVs and Frontiers as is... OK, add everything on your wishlist.

Saw plenty of work NVs on our trip and 1 4x4 white or silver NVP with lift, rack and boxes on the pack east of Pagosa Springs, CO. Just north of Truth or Consequences, NM may have seen “Hubs” NV with the solar panels on the side.

I saw the Titan dumped the 7 speed transmission it shared with the NV, and now has a 9 speed. And the 5.6 is up to 400hp. Taking that updated motor and tranny and plopping it in the NV would make for quite a sleeper lol.

Adventure Journal had an article on “crate motors,” specifically the old practice of installing small block V8s in Toyota FJs. The new direction will be a small block electric motor.

Has anyone considered installing a “crate diesel” in their NV? It has been done by Quigley and that extreme NV conversion.

As an aside, a 2019 Sprinter 4x4 camper conversion gets 14+ mpg, the same as the NVP Advanced conversion. Not bad, plus you don’t have to deal with Sprinter issues.

While it’s possible, I can’t imagine putting the Diesel in a vehicle not designed for it.... with all the exhaust after treatment, DEF tank and plumbing, intercooler, etc. It would only be possible by the most dedicated guys lol.

There was news after the GM strike “settlement” that one of the plants scheduled to close will remain open to produce electric “vehicles.” A reporter later clarified “vehicles” to mean trucks. One problem is that Rivian is nearby and has a deal to make electric powered trucks for Amazon.

Did Nissan miss out on getting into electric vans? Seems like the NV 1500 and 200 would be perfect.

On second thought, maybe Nissan (returns to*) the electric game if Chevy City Express continues to use the rebadged NV 200 in its plans for electric trucks. The NV 200 is a world van, built in Mexico, India, Spain, China, Malaysia as well as Japan.

*In 2012 at the North American Auto Show, the NVe200 concept had the same engine as the Leaf with a 73 mile range.

Back to the original thread. I still would like Nissan to make a deal with FCA to use eTorque in the Titan and larger NVs.

Back to electric. Saw an article that there is proposal to encourage the general health of the auto industry and growth of home grown electric vehicles. The plan is to offer $3-5k for your 8+ year old vehicle plus a $2k rebate or something. Vehicles turned in will be crushed. Granted, many people don’t keep their vehicles this long and many lease. So they could go through a couple of vehicles and be ready for this plan. It won’t work for us. Not likely the feds could pull this off...

I agree. From what little I’ve read it seems like it would be cost prohibitive, even for the govt. lol. But they are most likely throwing it out to see what sticks and modify it from there into another possible cash-for-clunkers type program in the future.
