Last2ConvertNV, I installed the DVT swivel a couple months ago and the install procedure went smoothly. Your posted install tips above will be helpful to anyone that will be doing this DTV install. The swivel base transforms the rear cargo area into a living room. I did remove the seat base entirely before doing the install. This also allowed me to have better access to the bolts, test fitting and easier access to thoroughly clean everything and lube the tracks before the final install. I do not use the center console nor do I put my fridge between the seats. I ended up with 4 concerns with the DTV swivel base that I felt will need some of my attention and modification in the future. 1.) I found that when the seat is swiveled around to face the rear of the van, the seat would slide only a few inches towards the rear of the van, not allowing the seat back to recline very far at all. That is not a deal breaker for me since I personally do not need it to recline very much. It does make access to the glove box a tighter squeeze. 2.) With the seat is installed on the DTV swivel base and the seat facing forward, the seat now becomes off centered above the rails about 1 and 3/4 inches towards the driver's side. This does make the center aisle narrower. This may have been designed this way to allow the seat to swivel without having to open the door for better clearance. I have only swiveled the seat from the outside with the passenger and slider doors opened. 3.) The center bearing of the DTV swivel base is not centered on the mounting plate. When the seat is swiveled to face the rear, the seat is now another 2 inches further in to the aisle. 4.) The seat does not feel solid on the swivel base. Both the top and bottom base plates flex when I lean back in the seat. When I hit the seat or the seat back firmly with my hand, the seat base plates flexes enough to let the seat bounce, rocking back and forth like seat is mounted on a spring. I contacted DTV support about this we went in circles until they stopped responding to my emails and texts. I had installed a swivel base into my previous ford e350 van and the base did not have any of these issues. That seat base was not a DTV base though. Different van, different base. The DTV base currently appears to be the only option for the NV van. The Swivel Base feels solid and is a little heavy, the price is fair, and the shipping was fast. It works good the way that it is. Some day I will be pulling the entire assembly out and will be making the modifications to the base to fix the issues I have with it. It may take some welding, maybe adding another metal plate to realign and strengthen. Let me know if you have experienced these same issues with your install. longboardguy

OEM wheels from any brand that fit the NV
Renzo replied to fenderfatstrat6's topic in Wheels & Tires
Late to the party, but I've been trying to find the answer also...It looks like 2003 Ram 2500 wheels have same offset/bolt circle/center hole B U T they are 16" which is what Im looking for. 245/75R16 is 30.5" diameter 255/75R16 is 31.1" diameter. Am I wrong thinking 16" has more options/cheaper price? -
The dog formula seems to be the smaller the dog(s), the larger the RV. Large dogs fit fine in an NV. Don’t leave them at home.

In my case I never owned a dog, so I thought that this new to me lifestyle could help me to materialize my child's dream to have a dog as my travel companion. German Shepherd, the only dog breed I was considering, non-compromising here. Luckily, a "reality check" forced me to acknowledge facts rather than my own perceptions and wishful thinking about having a large dog in such a small living space. I know it could be done as I saw many times when not even one big dog but two were traveling with their owner. It is just me, getting old and feeling intimidated by the responsibilities of owing a dog in a van. Good news for me is that I am still far away from slowing down and shifting my focus from active engagement to more passive activities.
-
I've been thinking of ways to use the fully closed passenger seat to work as a platform for my large german shepherd in solo trips. He loves to surf up in the "cockpit". I was intrigued by your dog bed replacement of the passenger seat, but disheartened by your comment not to bring him/her along. Is that the common consensus of the van community that it's better to leave your dog at home?

This post is a bit dated, but I'll include some comments that may be of help to others. There is a good youtube video on how to install the DiscountVanTruck swivel seat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKXrZeXF-yE Here is my experience in installing the seat. Thanks also to Bilco's post which contains excellent information, some of which I've repeated below. 1) You will have to free up the air bag wires from the bottom of the seat. They are held on by a metal tie contraption that is not easy to release. I ended up carefully clipping the metal tie with a wire cutter. 2) The bottom of the plastic trim that you removed in the video will have to be trimmed by 1/4" - 1/2" or it will catch on the top bolts when you swivel the chair. I did this with a grinder with a tile saw blade. Ascetically looks good. 3) The swivel arm will catch on one of the factory fixed bolts on the chair base about 1/3 into the turn. You can get by it by depressing the swivel arm again, but that is difficult to do when you are swiveling the chair which takes some effort. I got around this by cutting the bolt off of the base with a mini saws-all. This would be easy to do with a grinder at the very first stage when you remove the chair off of the base. I figure it's fine to have 7 of the original 8 bolts holding down the chair. glides smoothly through the 180 degree turn (again with a bit of effort). The offending bolt is the 2nd bolt from the dashboard on the console side of the chair. Perhaps Bilco's suggestion to add washers eliminates the need to cut one of the factory bolts. I had no problem using the sliding mechanism once the swivel base was installed. 4) Reinserting the bolts to the chair and swivel base is not an easy process as illustrated in the video - especially on the console side. I had to get the wife involved to provide a 2nd set of hands. I wish I would have taken Bilco's advice and removed the entire chair from the van floor and did this operation in the garage on a table where I could move the chair around in various positions to get the nuts in place. The chair when swiveled and fully reclined leaves you wanting to recline a little more. I found by swiveling the chair to a position where you are skewed toward the middle of the van, it will clear the dashboard bump out and will allow the chair to recline further. 5) We have a small fridge (costway?) that we put in between the seats. I'm glad that it stills fits between the seats with the chairs facing forward. It NO LONGER fits when the seat is swiveled. So we'll have to place the fridge elsewhere once we get to the campsite. Overall, I really like this swivel base.

It's called by many names. but it is a plastic guard that attaches to the front of the hood and prevents scratches from flying debris. More importantly, I think it looks cool with a bull bar.

Nice. Except for a short period between dogs, we enjoy having them along on camping trips. On one occasion, I absentmindedly put just bought scones and bread on top of a food box instead of in it. Previous dogs wouldn’t have cared but our first time camper dog thought otherwise. Retuned from getting fish and chips to find our van interior covered in crumbs.

My design intend was to travel solo with a dog, so passenger seat had been removed and dog's bed installed instead. Being on the road and speaking to many dog owners, I dropped this idea. As for starting another project, yes, liveaboard motorsailer.

Saw your for sale ad. Didn’t see mention of available passenger seat. This will increase interest. Starting another project?

Any one know where I can purchase one of these "mustache" hood protectors? Nissan no longer carries the part. I'd be ok with a used one.

New Lug Nuts Don't Hold Hubcap Tight
captaincaveman replied to captaincaveman's topic in Nissan NV 2500HD
It turns out, the hard plastic washer on the old nuts needed to be put on the new nuts, and then it worked perfectly. If anyone else is looking for lug nuts for their van, I ended up going with these, and am pretty happy with them so far. https://www.ebay.com/itm/404472791142 -

Correct, mostly. The early V8 did have the 3.54 ratio. Once the V8 got the 7-speed they all got the 3.36. Go aback in history when the Titan was launched with this 5-speed transmission. Nissan claimed the 3.36 ratio was like others 4.10 ratio. The logic/math was the 5-speed had a much lower 1st gear. So the standing start was very close. But the Nissan 5-speed overdrive ratio was also very different as well. The normal 4-speed transmissions that were out at the time had 0.70-0.75 overdrive. While the Nissan had only .85 overdrive. If you wanted to play even more, the Titan XD diesel has a 3.92 ratio in the same axle design that can be swapped into the Van's axle. Or a 4.09 in the '20-24 Titan XD with the 9-speed (has a really tall set of overdrive ratios). Nothing wrong with running in 3rd gear. The VQ motor likes some RPM. It has an oil cooler. The basic engine design goes back to the mid 90s. Versions of this engine are used in Z-cars, an alphabet soup infinity cars, well regarded in the engine design. Trying to change the axle ratio is going to still put the engine into the same RPM band, just in a different gear, and make driving without the trailer much worse.

Not a chance of the 7-speed bolting up. The back of the block is completely different. And the programming of the transmission is completely wrong as well. The V6 is OK in a mid sized truck. Not really a good choice in a full size van that is trying to tow. It can move it, just not a great job of doing it as you have found.
-
Renzo, both front and rear bumpers are from Aluminess. They don't have any products for Nissan NV anymore. It looks like they sold their design/drawings/jigs to the company you mentioned.
-
Maybe I missed this in the long list of components: Is this the Front bumper you used? https://www.vividracing.com/aluminess-front-bumper-brush-guard-nissan-20112018-p-152777409.html

I am dealing with the swollen lug nuts issue, and purchased some new nuts off Ebay that are supposed to fit. They are the right style, how ever, the end that holds the wheel on is longer than the originals and don't hold the hub caps in place. From what I can tell, the tip of the nut is what is holding the wheel on, and the flat part is only holding the hub cover on/tight. Has anyone else had this problem? (Edit to add that the old nut shown has the chrome shell removed.)

Depends on the height of a fixed platform and the desired “garage” underneath. If you plan to store bikes upright, you will need more space. Our poptop NV plan doesn’t help answer your question, but part of the upper bed is suspended from the roof. Manual drop down to shoulder high. We sleep on top and leave the couch/NSbed in place with gear stored behind the seat back and under the couch. Water tank and inverted also there. Does limit floor space and no easy exit out the back. Hasn’t been an issue.

Hi Renzo, The east-west distance to the finished walls (not including flares) at the height of where the bed is when it is down is approx. 68 1/2 ". I am a little over 6' so this would have been a cramped for me. I hear you about the flare cost. I was considering trying to fabricate something myself out of fiberglass before I stumbled onto the deal they made with me. I have seen some DIY flares on other vans and wasn't too impressed so really glad to have what is installed. The other option is a north-south bed but that really cuts into the living space. I remember the whole design/build process for us being one of compromise. In the end though after using it for a couple of years we have been really happy with it. No changes other than tweaks on where stuff is stored and arranged. Still happy with the NV van. Easy to work on and has been very dependable. Good luck on your build.

TCM is inside the tranny. Plug should be on the pass side iirc. Clean everything off real good, remove connector. Blow everything out, regrease with elec grease, and push it back on. Make sure you hear it click into place. -
Axle ratio change for towing
Local Apparent Friday replied to NVEli's topic in Cargo, Hauling & Towing
You would go lower gear ratio for towing, not higher, but it's a moot point as nothing is avaliable aftermarket. Best you can do is swap for the v8 ring gear which i think is possible and a different ratio, but my mind isn't in it right now. Theoretically the actual bolting of the two things together is no big deal. Trying to get it to run is a whole 'nother story. -

Without the flares installed what was the max height of a person to comfortably use the bed in the "East/West" configuration? That cost is a big bite out of my budget build.
