  1. My remote starter is finally installed. I got a Compustar CS-800-S-KIT from Best Buy for $229 (installation included). It's a one-way system with about a thousand foot range. I had to wait almost a month for installation, but it was really nice to offload that job to someone else. :-) This particular remote starter is definitely not plug and play. There's no T-harness, so it requires a lot of wire hunting and splicing. Their appointment booking system estimated it would take 3.5 hours for a Nissan NV. The installer at Best Buy has been working with these for a long time and really knows what he's doing. It took him a bit over 4 hours. That means it probably would have taken me a day or two. I'm really happy with it so far. It works exactly as one would expect. If you want a remote starter, sign up for Best Buy's deal of the day email. They have deals on remote starters every few weeks during the cold weather months. That saved me about $70. A lot of the deals include installation in the price.
  2. I drove a couple hundred miles through the mountains on Saturday and figured out the beeps along the way. The high-medium-low pattern means that the speed limit is being reduced and the vehicle to traveling too fast for the new speed limit. This warning was very accurate on my trip. The high-low-high pattern is warning about the need to reduce speed around a curve in the road. I don't know how it determines that the vehicle is going too fast for the curve, but it's almost always wrong. :-)
  3. I have an NV3500 passenger version with OEM tires. It does okay in the snow, but our Dodge Grand Caravan handles it a lot better. I've needed tire chains a few times this winter on the NV, but never on the minivan (which also has all season tires). I'm wondering if reducing the NV's rear tire pressure would help in the snow. Can anyone tell me if that would be a good idea?
  4. I'm new to the world of towing, so I could use some eduction. Why does the van have two tow hooks in the front? Are you supposed to use both of them in tandem? Or do you choose a single hook based on the angle when recovering the vehicle? A neighbor helped pull my van out of snow using one of the tow hooks and a tow strap. The only damage to the van was a small paint chip on the tow hook where I attached the tow strap's hook. I since learned that I should have used a recovery strap, not a tow strap. I'll have to find one of those for next time.
  5. I'll experiment for a while and see if I can figure something out.
  6. I'd like to have some more short seat track covers included, so I can cover the mounting points for the 4th row. Also, the rear view mirror is useless when all the seats are installed with their headrests, so I'd like to replace it with a full-time rear view camera that would be mounted above the rear doors. And I'd like a switch in the front for the driver to override the passenger light switches. It would have four settings: off, auto, on, or passenger controlled.
  7. I bought my NV3500 in December in northern Utah (home of lots of snow) and didn't have to sign any such form. In fact, the owner's manual says you can use chains as long as they're class S and you only use them on the rear wheels. I picked up some Auto-Trac brand chains at Walmart for about $70. I got the version that has my tire size listed on the box. It's a snug fit, but they work well. The chain manufacturer's website suggests a different size. I don't know which one's better.
  8. I asked my dealership and was told that the course lines aren't meant to react to vehicle steering. The manual is wrong.
  9. Thank you! I spent some time searching the manuals, especially the AV one, but I haven't found any answers. I also contacted the dealership where I bought the van. They sell more NVs than any other dealership in the nation, so I figured they would know the answer. They're stumped, too.
  10. I'm not worried about 2.5 milliwatts of microwave energy, especially since it isn't forming a standing wave. It's many orders of magnitude below acceptable exposure limits. Most Wi-Fi routers produce microwaves with more than 100 times that much power, and I consider those to be harmless, too. I'd rather not spend the money on shop manuals if I can help it. But it is an interesting idea.
  11. That's an interesting idea. I'm not completely certain that it's coming from the sound system, but it sounds like it is to me. I'm not using Bluetooth very often, so I could turn it off for a while to see if it makes a difference. The problem is that the beeps only happen once every few days, so it's hard to decide if something really fixes it or not.
  12. There aren't any indicators in the instrument cluster or map display that suggest a problem, but I'll follow up on that avenue just in case.
  13. I don't have front sensors, and the rear sensors are turned off when driving forward. Plus, it's a completely different sound. So, I can rule out sonar as the culprit. My mystery beeps always happen in threes.
  14. I have a 2016 NV 3500 with the tech package. I sometimes hear beeps that sound like they're coming through the car's speakers. I'd like to know what they mean. I know what the speed alert sounds like and I know what the sonar alert sounds like, but this isn't either of those. Sometimes it's three beeps descending in pitch. Other times the pitches are high, low, high (but none of them as high as the speed alert). What are these trying to tell me?
  15. I have a 2016 NV 3500HD. I got stuck in the snow last night and noticed something strange while I was rocking the van to get it unstuck. Whenever the wheels started spinning fast in reverse, the rear view camera would shut off. It would remain off until I shifted out of reverse and back into it again. I was afraid that I would get unstuck and then blindly fly backwards. Is it supposed to do that? If it's intentional, I'd love to know why. Epilogue: Some kind neighbors with shovels and a 4x4 truck helped to pull me out. The recovery hooks on the NV's front bumper work great! I felt bad about getting stuck, at least until a couple hours later when a big 10-wheel snowplow got stuck just a few feet away from the same spot. :)
  16. I downloaded the 2017 manual and it doesn't say anything about predictive course lines. I wonder if they weren't ever a feature in 2016 , but the manual just didn't get updated until 2017.
  17. I have a problem with the wiring harnesses that go from the van body to the rear doors. Whenever I open the doors all the way and close them again, the harnesses get pinched in the doors. A portion of the harness is left sticking out the back of the van. This happens the same way on both sides. To prevent it, I have to close the doors partway, then pull the harnesses down a bit before closing the doors the rest of the way. Does anyone else have this problem?
  18. From a DIY point of view, the Fortin looks promising. I haven't found any other brand that makes a T harness for the NV. Please point out any I may have missed. My NV doesn't fit in my garage and I don't like the idea of splicing wires in the snow, so I'm to buy something from Best Buy and let them figure out how to install it. They sometimes have some decent online deals on packages that include the remote starter and installation.
  19. I have a 2016 NVP 3500 SV, manufactured in 11/16. The course lines can be turned on and off by pressing the camera button, but they don't respond at all to the steering wheel. They always point straight back.
  20. I just got a new NV on Friday. It came with about 72 PSI in all four tires. The van was so new, it was still in storage mode from the factory. I wonder if the factory, not the dealer, inflated the tires like that.
  21. If anyone tries the Fortin, please let us know how it goes. The chart at the top on the installation instructions says that it can't control the door locks on the NV. That would be a bummer.
  22. I had that happen once when it was really cold. It worked fine after it warmed up again.
