  1. Yes on the manual mode. I like the way it works too, very easy. Auto drops 1 gear when engaged, but you can cycle it up or down from there. That situation caught me off guard...only have a 1000 miles on it. Felt like the first time learning to drive a stick on steep hills from a stop. So in hind sight just pushing the manual button would have dropped it into 1st. In fairness it was a ridiculously steep driveway.
  2. Just went up a very steep driveway at a slow speed and nearly stalled the 2017 high roof v8 7sp. I didn't die...but it sure sounded like it wanted to before it dropped into I assume 1st gear. I think what's going on here is this transmission is just confused, It just doesn't shift in a predictable fashion. I hope in due time Nissan has a update that makes it "less confused". I have not had the "fan sound" problem that a lot of the 17 owners seem to be fussing with. I thought it made the sound once but in my case it was 100+ degrees out and the ac was cranking and that was just the effect of the fan clutch engaging. I wonder if when the fan engages the motor with all its fancy optimum cooling gizmos that it bumps up the rpm to compensate for the normal hp loss of engaging the fan blade...Just a guess. Any way, I won't be idling up a steep driveway anymore, got to use that throttle in the NV. This engine seems to idle a lot more like a chevy, dribbling just just enough fuel to keep it running but with a case of the stumbles. Personally I'd like to see a little more fuel delivery and a smoother idle.

  4. Do you have tow mode engaged? Tow mode drastically changes the shift points. I have noticed that the 7 speed seems to do a lot of engine braking. Also newer motors seem to have much higher rpms available. Back in the old days 5000 rpm was redline...not so much now. The only thing I have noticed is the new 5.6 engine seems to stumble-start like its getting just enough fuel to turn over and not a drop more. 2017 5.6 V8 high roof cargo.

    There are some new rules coming out about 2nd row occupant crash stuff which will apply to newer models in the coming years which got me thinking about installing a sacrificial impact panel on the 2nd row driver side. Mercedes will have to upgrade that crew van option to comply moving forward. I think the law is regarding interior panels and having no exposed metal in a passenger area including the roof. Disclaimer- this is all my own home grown engineering, anything you do to your van is your own liability. That said I used trunk liner to carpet the factory panels and installed 1 1/2 crash foam laminated with a bubble foil radiant barrier on both sides in the window depression. The thinking is the 1/8" factory panel is weak enough to give under a side impact and the foam acts like a bike helmet. Better than a exposed metal panel in any case. In hind sight the 1 1/2" foam was a bit thick with the radiant barrier lamination.

    2nd row "3 person narrow seats" from a new ford transit purchased from norcal vans and shipped by fastenal. $350 including shipping! Incredible luck that 4 or the holes in the brackets lined up with the factory holes though the "ladder" portion of the bed frame with 1/2" grade 8 bolts and washers. I over engineered the rest with over a dozen 1/2" 2 1/2"-3"grade 8 bolts with a combination of uni-strut and steel plates that I galvanized on the underside.

  13. I had the same problem in my ford e350. Ran synthetic from day 1 with great results and at about 80-90K was burning oil..not visible, just dissappearing. I switched to standard high mileage type oil and poof, no more oil burning probs. Just a theory, but I think an engine with a some miles on it... the synthetic oil is a little too clean, therefore it gets by the worn in parts and burns.
  14. Company in Ca has a fleet of refrigerated NVs. "The Berry Man" so I'm guessing they deal mostly in berries? Which seem like they would be fairly heavy also. They have purchased from the same dealer I got mine. According to the dearlership they love their NVs.
  15. I think the cat is out of the bag regarding the disposable vans being produced by everyone else. I thought I saw something recently that Chevy is going to drop a GM motor in a NV and slap their name on it. They have done this with Isuzu, seems like a logical move. I really think Nissan can't keep up with production, they have a good heavy duty reliable high roof cargo van and Transit, Sprinter and Promaster have respectively $#it the bed in some way or another. Local company near me has a fleet of 9 NV high roofs with refrigerated cargo boxes. You have to be confident with your choice before you cut a hole in the roof and stick a refrigerator unit on it. Look at the good used condition Ford econoline values-way up. The "fatal flaw in the Sprinter" article is killing Mercedes. There’s no way Nissan could have anticipated the surge in demand. I know I certainly spent enough time on the transit and sprinter forums before dropping $40K on a metal box with wheels. I'd rather wait for a good reliable Nissan NV to be built than wait @ the competitions service dept.

  17. Very nice. I'd like to do the same for my driver side seat. Maybe more like 2" though. Did the factory seat unbolt? I looked briefly at it and the mechanism appeared to have a portion of it riveted together.
  18. I think all new cargo vans come standard with a rubber mat with 3/4" denim pad underneath standard...My SV did. Seems a little soft for commercial use...maybe it just has to compress a little more. Thanks for the cushion recommendation, I'll check it out.
  19. I washed my new high roof cargo NV once and said never again! Took over an hour! The next day I ordered a CRS spotless wash and hooked it up to a pressure washer. Life may resume now. I really don't even use much or any soap at all. "Hose it off and walk away." Once and a while I have to get a brush or mitt to hit a bug cause I don't want to really go hard with a pressure washer. They advertise you can spray it and walk away and it does work as advertised. I wash and rinse with the system, might be overkill but I seems that to roof holds a lot of water so I don't see the point of washing with hard water and having it pool on the roof only to run off when you move it. I'd rather have the treated water left up there and then I don't worry about it. I still like to dry the windows out of habit, and any horizontal spots like the hood and the window cut out ridge if only to have one damp towel to dust the interior with. They have a refer a friend 10% discount available, message me and I'll reply with the info. Not sure if its kosher to mention that on the forum, but hey it's free money if your going to buy one anyway.
  20. I have a mix of DG, sand and clay at our shop. So far NV seems OK in dry conditions. Can't be much worse than the limited slip in the old econoline. Not a fan of the stock tires. Love the Toyo open country tires on my Ford. I didn't have much luck with Michelin's, but they were from Costco which I hear is not the same, rumor.. myth who knows, just never buying tires at Costco again. I put Noico sound mat on the rear wheel wells (inside the van) and it made a big difference in any rock throwing noise. American van has a good window screens for the rear windows if you go that route. Still waiting for a bulkhead with a door (back ordered 4 weeks from CARiD.com.) I'm still thinking about a way to raise the drivers seat. I was going to unbolt it and buy longer grade 8 bolts with a 1/2" or 3/4" plate but there is also a pin that references the seat into position. So back to the drawing board. Might have to mill something to accept the pin as well as go into the reference hole to be legit.
  21. I just got a 2017 cargo sv 3500. Was lucky enough to find one the day it came to the lot and 4 other dealerships were trying to snag it from the dealer I bought from. Same exact situation. Really love my old 2000 e350. The nissan nv is the closest thing to the old tough as nails econoline. I was bolting second row seats up today in the NV and can say the frame is a solid frame. The driveline is a good 3"+ heavy duty traditional driveline without that ridiculous rubber donut just behind the tranny like on the transit. I'd check for cracks on that part if you have a transit. NV also has real load rated tires and huge brakes. The interior is pretty awesome to bolt up racks. The downside is that its roughly a 10' long cargo area. The truck style front end is a little hard to go back to, but it is way safer in a frontal crash situation and seems to have better air bags (6) total. The engine bay has nearly 2' in front of the actual engine so I think it will fare better in a deer strike which is a thing in my area. Good call to go with the highest model. The sv model doesn't have a seat height adjustment, wish it did. I'm 5'11 and I could almost use a booster seat to see over that hood. All the new 1 ton trucks are really tall, I dont get why. With all thw sheet metal on these things I'm going to add more sound deadening mat before I put in racks...especially over the rear wells. I have a high roof but there are factory ladder roof mounts up there, of course you need a ladder to get to them. So far so good. Best heavy duty van? I think its the only heavy duty van made now.
  22. Has anyone done a catch can on a 2017 V8 yet? Theory seems solid catching contaminants before they are introduced and ultimately coked on the back sides of the intake valves via the pcv system.
  23. I went to a dealership intending to buy a 16 v8 high roof cargo(less $) and drove a identical 2017 high roof cargo v8 and there was no comparison. I bought the 2017. The 16 with the old v8 seemed like a dog coming from owning a e350 ford gas v10. I haven't towed with it yet, havent even floored it to be honest (break in is 1000 miles/under 4000rpm) but empty it climbs a 7% grade with zero effort in 7th gear. The manual shift feature is really cool as is the towing mode but It might be a bit over kill. I goofed around on the grade with the gears going uphill and there is less than 400 rpm between the higher gears. Pretty sure nissan knows they have won the heavy van towing battle. No contest really.
