Additions: Windows, screens, racks, bumpers, boxes, awnings
radin2son replied to radin2son's topic in Conversions
I don't know if this rack brand has been mentioned... I met the owner of a 90's V10 E-series Ford window van camper/Quigley conversion. No pop top. 2 years ago he purchased the van as is for $15k. He made some interior changes and added a full rack, awning and fridge/frezzer all made Ironman from Australia. On the rack he has 4 round running lights, the awning, a solar panel that tilts and a water tank painted black with a hose that hangs down the side for gravity fed water. Plenty of room for other gear as well. He also has a small solar panel on the hood for the van battery. Van only has a 20 gallon gas tank, but he will be adding second tank to extend range. He can carry fuel cans on a rear bumper rack that also holds a spare. WRONG Info on the rack. It is a custom fabrication by the original owner. -
We would put the roof top set up on the current Frontier before the fashion designers get to it. On this trip, we have seen this set up on a 4Runner and new Tacoma. But, we have what we have and love it...

These photos (Boulder UT) may generate some interest... Transit low top vs NV low top. We were parked there first. Some kind of challenge? Saw a silver NVP at Bryce Canyon NP on 6/6. Anyone we know?

Weight, width and length are a NV problem in general when negotiating primitive roads. V8, 4x4 and lift can help, but don't do away with how wide and long they are. Meeting an oncoming vehicle on a narrow dirt road with soft or no driveable shoulder can get interesting. Smaller vehicles get out of the way... Odd choice, Frontier or Pathfinder vs NV, as they are not in the same league. I do like the current Frontier, however, and would go that direction if we no longer had our NV.

In the past week we have have several posts for "want to buy rear seats" and response for "available rear seats." Did they connect? Were they sold, all of them? This is not the easiest forum to locate old posts, at least on the mobile version, so maybe the time is right to use this...

Definitely pm Chris_cm. Scott Clark also has a great service department. Last year on a road trip back east, we stopped by to meet Chris. It turned out we needed to get a emmisions sensor (long story) fixed, not replaced,

I'm all for long shelf life and incremental changes, some good, some questionable and some, "what were they thinking?" It keeps our 2012 SV looking fresh and resale value reasonably higher; although, the SMB conversion throws a wrinkle in this. I also am glad we went with all available SV options (tow package and additional air bags for example) that became standard with newer models.

nissanreviewreleas.com has an interesting article that is sort of in sync with chris_cm's hints This 4/1 (mind the date) article is more about GM giving up on their van, teaming up with Nissan and rebadging the NV, and using GM engines. This would include their diesel... May show up on Nissan as well. Not much about other Nissan NVP changes. This and another Googled site read like a 2016 brochure. The other site, however, made no mention of GM or diesel. More than likely a repeat April Fools...

Flashman, both of your posts point to poor NVP quality control at the Canton facility and the dealership. The crossed wires shouldn't have passed through the factory doors, but the paint and bumper probably would not have been that big a deal on the cargo van, particularly for commercial users. You have to wonder why the dealer, any dealer would fight warranty issues. Naive I know, but is there a backhand? Do what ASD Dad suggests but also follow this up with Nissan Commercial Customer Service; they may reimburse you for the body shop expense. If not resolved, file a complaint with whatever consumer protection agency is in your state. Then find another dealer... I can't imagine service will be any better. Future buyers, who do their research, will need to look their NVPs over very carefully before leaving the lot.

nihil_perditi, SMB installs pop tops on low roof chassis perhaps because these are inherently more rigid than high roof vans. You also may want to pm Jon Nelson, as he had a pop top installed by another company on his high top NV several years ago. The company name may be somewhere on this forum.

Our NV SMB has without question the largest hole in the roof, from the back of the cab almost to the rear doors. SMB has been building these pop tops for 50 years on a variety of chassis with barn doors and sliders; no known problems noted on the SMB forum. SMB does this by installing steel (?) flat beams (1/4" X 4" +\-)* on both sides, front to aft. No cross support. The beam really cuts into the interior stand up room on the passenger side, and we have both hit our backs and heads when entering the van. It also is a high step up due the sub floor. The grab handle gets heavy use... The driver's side has the cabinets, so beam is not as noticeable. *I was wrong about the width of the support beam; it is all upholstered. It's 4" not 12"". In addition to this, there is a steel channel bolted or welded to this beam where the spring tension pop top mechanism resides.

We must have been in a cellular dead zone; missed your first and subsequent build posts. It is not a surprise that nautical bits show up in camper van builds. Do you really need a fan to move air out? That is a huge opening... The CR Laurence windows let a lot of air in. My wife and I just finished cutting reflectix panels to cover all our windows, not counting the rear windows, windshield, and cab windows. We bought a 10' roll for $27 ($4 a ft if you need less) a 50 yard roll of 2" metal duct tape and Velcro. The problem is these panels take up space when not needed and we don't know how many we will need on a given trip. We'll find out this week on what could be a very hot trip, with little shade and no potable water if there is any water at all. How do you plan to use your NV?

Your news wheels do look great. I'm waiting to see who will be the first to powder coat the silver side door guide...

Camera Predicted Course Lines???
radin2son replied to jaredg's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
In the video, there is a "camera" button. It may be safe to assume that its absence in 2016 NVs means no pedicted lines. If it is there, there may be hope for an update. Give Nissan Commercial a call and they may be able to tell you if an upgrade is possible. I doubt the dealer could without calling their rep. In the interim, you will just have to continue to use these great mirrors... -
Welcome. Just what a 15 yr old needs, personal space...

Water, smooth roads; next you will be posting photos of level sites. Looks very tempting. You may see our van on your property... 2017?

Same... I wish more people would post photos of their trips. With more reservations required, now at many national monuments and some forest service campgrounds, it is great to have known alternatives posted to say nothing of the scenery.

Beautiful area. We plan to return to Missouri and will add it to the itinerary. Since it is a biway, does that mean paved or dirt roads, or is it one the many trails that shadow the river systems? So different than what we are used to...

Camera Predicted Course Lines???
radin2son replied to jaredg's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
One more item in the manual I never saw or understood, more likely my eyes never crossed those 5 pages. It is time to consult manual man, JBharlin. Supposedly, Nissan upgraded the nav, but I don't see how they are connected other than sharing the screen. Is it possible that this feature is in the instrument cluster, and you turn it off the same way you disable the rear sensors when towing? -
No horn beep when locking with the remote
radin2son replied to TAmc41's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
JB Harlin, you will be our go to manual. -
Our NV also is a V8. We sometimes end up using off brands but see the same fuel takers delivering fuel no matter what rhe brand. So no problems in this regard either.
-
I agree about not straying too far to find the "right" fuel. I also get the pros and cons for using premium, but... We use whatever regular (85 or 87) we can find and have never noticed any problems whether driving in the mountains or flat lands.

No horn beep when locking with the remote
radin2son replied to TAmc41's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
In all probability it is one or both rear doors. This has always been the case when our NV locks but is silent. It also could be the sliding door that some have had to shim, but their problem was not locking or unlocking if I recall. -
I doubt after a year the dealer would do anything unless as Axulsuv suggested there is an irregularity in the flange... I would use a good windshield replacement business, not necessarily where your insurance company wants to send you. Have them check it while you are there. If there is a problem, contact your dealer. Probably will get a "wear and tear" initial response. The tough part will be whether or not to put in a new windshield that may crack again if the problem is not fixed and how many windshields your insurance will cover. This is a good example of (Dunn625) not posting a follow up. You can always use Ruben as a negotiator...
