Engine knock and TSB warranty work

Recommended Posts

I have a 2017 NV passanger van that has been at my local dealership for 4 weeks this Tuesday. After being told it was normal for some NV’s to sound the way mine did, I discovered the TSB. I took the info to Nissan and the decided to replace the short block under warranty. After getting it back together, they’ve been having issues with codes.  An was running lean and not accelerating properly. They ended up replacing the fuel pump. Still did not fix it. I was told it is running fine but still throwing codes. Something clearly wasn’t put back together properly and my poor wife has been without a vehicle for almost a month. Frustration after frustration. Now I’m worried about what other problems will arise after I finally get it back. It only has 64k miles. ?‍♂️

So I posted this in the older post but wanted to move to the appropriate forum based off of year. Update on my current situation: So, Friday morning I spoke with my Nissan dealership and I was told “it should be put back together later today, if not first thing tomorrow morning” The service rep then informed me that he would call me and let me know later today where we’re at. I did not hear from them later on Friday, nor did I hear from them on Saturday. I called this morning and of course can never get ahold of anyone. My wife stopped in there a d talked to the service manager who has not been helpful in this whole situation. The issue is that the dealership was unable to provide us with a loaner vehicle that could suit my wife and 5 children. So for the past month, we have been inconveniencing  family in order to get a vehicle to transport our family. It has created tensions as my wife and I feel like we are burdening our family. Also, when the dealership tells us it will be back together today or tomorrow, our family is expecting to get their vehicle back. We have been told our vehicle should be done by this day on 3 or 4 different occasions now. I feel like customer service has been the least of their concern. I have a case open with consumer affairs but feel like that has gotten me nowhere. How to I get ahold of a regional manager or someone I can escalate this too. A lot of this hassle and the stressors could have been avoided had they provided us with a vehicle.

Also, when this is all said and done, I’ll have till December on my manufactures warranty. With all the problems they are having getting it back together, I have concerns it’ll have ongoing issues ?‍♂️

Someone that's been around the block will be along shortly with how to get in touch with someone, but the recall issues and their liability will extend further than your existing warranty.  Also, from the time I've spent in the various nissan groups, this is a common issue with the second gen engines.  Sorry to hear that you're having issues and hope that they can get you straight at best and, at the very least, get you into something that will work in the meantime.  Good luck.

Yeah, thanks for the response. I doubt that will happen. If anything a small reimbursement for the inconvenience they caused for my wife would be nice. Every time I mention about much of an inconvenience it has been, and the stress it’s caused for my wife due to feeling like we are burdening family, they say “well, hopefully it’ll be all done tomorrow and you won’t have to worry about finding a loaner vehicle.” I mean, that’s very considerate and all but it’s already been 4 weeks! I would like to reimburse family for the hassle and sacrifice they have made to help us out, when I’m reality, Nissan  should have had us in a vehicle from the very beginning.

You are not likely to get reimbursed for a non-expense, in your case, not renting a van on your own.

You, however, can give the dealer service department a bad review, both with the dealer and consumer affairs. Based on much older previous posts, this could cost jobs, top to bottom, or more likely the other way around. Use this to your advantage and get them to extend the overall warranty for your wasted time, frustration and related stress.

Next decision is, do you want to keep this van?

Laf Still think this should move to 2017+ 5.6 engine. It affects 2017 to early 2019 engines and will be easier to find. Assuming the fix works.

Jakerh22  Thanks for following up on this and hope “today or tomorrow” actually works out.

I would like to keep the van. My wife would not want to part with it. Even in the current market I would do it in a heart beat but my wife doesn’t feel the same way. We have been a huge help to so many people with the extra space. I wouldn’t want to take that away from her as it brings her joy being able to bless other families. In regards to the proper thread, did I not move it to the right forum?

So Nissan called this morning and said it’s finished. 4 weeks later ?‍♂️. I would feel more comfortable if there was some kind of warranty. My 5 year manufactures warranty is up in December. My concern is with all the issues they had after swapping out the short block, something obviously wasn’t put back together properly.

Ask the dealer about their warranty on parts and labor. If I recall correctly, there is/was a life time warranty on genuine Nissan parts for work done by dealerships. This wouldn’t cover filters, wiper blades etc.

Depending on their answer in writing, contact Nissan Corp to get clarification. Contact them anyway and keep a record. Should something fail related to this repair after December, you have a documented history.

Glad to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel...hopefully you've picked it up by now.

And the initial forum was fine, but it's better suited for the second gen engine forum, since this is not a unique-to-you issue, which is why I left the link.  Really it should just be divided into first gen and second gen instead of the year by year breakout, but this is okay too.

From what I have found, Nissan parts warranty is 12 months or 12,000 miles from dealer installation. Lots of parts are not covered, so service paperwork should show what is covered. Or ask.

If work is done by the dealer while the vehicle warranty is in effect but ends shortly thereafter, the parts warranty will continue.

Genuine Nissan parts not installed by the dealer have a 12 month warranty. (Does this mean unlimited miles if diy??) Again, lots of parts aren’t covered so check this at the dealer parts counter or check web site info carefully.

This was missing from above posts:

TBS NTB19-057a (4/3/2020)

Second gen V8 (2017) built prior to 1/15/2019.

Van is done. Got it back and engine knock is gone. I have a 12 month/12k mile warranty. This whole process left a really bad taste in my mouth. Consumer affairs was no help. They are just as bad as the dealership when it comes to communication. Can’t get ahold of them and they never return voicemails. I wish I knew how to move up the chain of command. Very unprofessional how the dealership handled this.

Good that you have your NV back and with a reassuring warranty. This was your ultimate goal despite the lack of dealer and Nissan communication.

If you heart is in it, you can still give the dealership a bad review. Depending on your location, look for a dealership that has good reviews. Your warranty will be covered no matter what dealer you choose.

You know…I typically don’t give bad reviews. I am an easy going person and I am non confrontational. Seeing how much this whole process upset my wife because of trying to find a ride for herself as well as our 5 children was frustrating. Trying to help us figure out a vehicle was the least of their concerns. And hearing about the interaction from the service manager and the way he treated my wife had my blood boiling. I did leave a review and the response…well let’s just say it was typical Yark Nissan style response. Not helpful and full of lies.

What’s really sad is the response to my review was directed to make it appear as if I was the unreasonable one and just complaining. Not ONCE did they offer to reach out and try and make this right. The response was not truthful. I ended up deleting my review. They don’t even deserve a 1 star review of that’s the way they treat their customers.

Talked to the GM and voiced my frustrations. First person who seemed like they were actually listening. The engine knock is definitely not like it was but I still feel like it’s not the way a normal gas engine should sound. Still has a little diesel motor sound too it just not near as bad! ?‍♂️

Hopefully you're just gunshy and it lasts for years to come.  Glad you got connected with someone that listened...at least you'll have someone to call if you have issues again.

The van is heading back to the dealership as the transmission is not shifting right. Imagine revving a manual to 3k before dropping the clutch. This has turned into a nightmare ?‍♂️. If I had to guess, the transmission  fluid had to be drained in order to replace the short block? Maybe fluid level is low or something else was not put back together right I’m hoping it’s something simple. ?

Sorry to hear this. Did you get an invoice, even though covered by warranty, showing parts, fluids etc. that may be related to the transmission?

Hope it is simple and that they don't stonewall you, but at least you are still under the original warranty if not part of the extended engine warranty.

So I took it yesterday and they had the van for 6 hrs. Got the go ahead to pick it up. They said they reprogrammed the ECM and that it was running better. I drove it home and seemed to be running fine. My wife took it to the store last night. This morning I went to leave and put it in reverse and it wasn’t moving ?. I shut it off and walked around the front of the van and found the issue. Any guesses as to what this fluid is? ?. I’ll give you a hint, it’s red and usually is housed in the transmission ?‍♂️. This is turning into a never ending nightmare

What a nightmare for you.  Sorry to hear that the saga continues...hope that the end result is a new engine/tranny and warranty.  Best of luck.
