  1. I recently replaced our 2016 NV3500 with a 2021 4x4 NV3500 conversion from Tim Dahle Nissan. We are pulling a travel trailer which weighs around 7,000 lbs. Is there anyone that has tried tuning or chipping the engine to get more performance while towing?
  2. Hello all, This is my first time here. And I am brand new to the concept of RV'ing, other than seeing friends do it. My wife and I have 5 kids (ages 10, 10, 10, 9, and 7) - 4 boys and 1 girl. We are considering RV'ing for the next few years to see the country. We are also in a place where we need to replace our 9 year old minivan with a new vehicle in the next year or so. Our first choice right now is the Nissan NV Passenger 3500 SL. With the 8700 lb. towing capacity, we are thinking that we can tow a pretty big RV that could sleep 7 people. I noticed that you can get an optional Class IV weight-distributing hitch with the SL 3500, and it seems like that is what we would need. Here is my questions: 1) Does the plan sound reasonable for our situation? 2) What is the maximum dry weight for an RV we should be looking at? Our plan would be to leave 7 seats in the NV passenger van and take out the rest. 3) I noticed that the NV has a tongue weight limit of 870 lbs. Some RVs distribute 12-14% of their weight onto the tongue, so for a 6,000 - 7,000 lb. RV, we could be exceeding the tongue weight. Is the 870 lb. tongue weight an absolute limit? Or is that increased by the weight-distributing class IV hitch? Would it be better to get a non-factory hitch? 4) We would like to take the RV cross-country, which definitely means some mountainous terrain along the way. What is everyone's experience towing that much weight up hills with a car full of 7 people? Will we be OK with this plan or are we not thinking about this the right way? Thanks so much for any advice you can offer. We like the looks of the NV reasonably well enough and its utility seems fantastic for our purposes. If you have experience towing a big RV, I'd love to hear your setup. Thanks, Fred
  3. So the family and I went on our first trip this weekend with our new spirit 3379BH and new recurve R3 wdh, took a bit to get the rear end sag under control but got it set and had a great weekend, on our way home we were almost to the house, and heard a loud bang, and basically as photos show the adjusting bolt sheered through and all of the weight was back sitting on the toung. Very disappointing and depending on what the RV place orders as a compensation we will most likely be going with the 4pt Equalizer this week, for an extra 200 but I guess it's worth it if these are the issues we can run into.
  4. This isn't strictly NV related, but I thought a lot of you might find it interesting. This video briefly explains how auto manufacturers determine a vehicle's towing capacity. It doesn't mention axle weight ratings, so it's not giving you the whole picture, but it's fun to see where the GCWR comes from.
  5. hello everyone: this has been the best place for me to obtain information to assist with any issues that i have with my trnsition from pickup truck. currently, i am in need of some assistance. i own a nissan nv2500 hightop v8. i am looking to purchase the torque t32 toyhauler bumper pull which weighs 8400 dry. i will need to tow this from texas to colorado. the rv dealer thinks that this may be pushing it since the tow capacity for nv2500 hightop v8 is 9500. needless to say, i am perplexed because i am under the impression that i can safely tow 9500 lbs as per nissan. does anyone have any insight or experience with pulling a trailer this size. any information will be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!!!
  6. Looking at buying a NVP3500 SL, also looking at a 4x4 package, any advice is welcomed. We are currently a family of 6 with possibility of more. Looking forward to reading on the forum and getting some great ideas for how to make mobilizing my family practical. Also does anyone have opinions of advanced 4x4 vs Quigley, I am much closer to advanced 4x4 but curious if there is a Quigley advantage? Thank you all! D
  7. Hey all, I currently have a 2015 NV SL. We've had it for 2 years and it works pretty good for towing our 7,000# travel trailer. Our current NV has a hard time with transmission shifts when towing the TT. At 65 mph or so (going up hills), the tranny will frequently shift to 3rd gear and hold it there much longer than it needs to. I sometimes have to go to manual mode to get it to shift back to 4th. I see that the new '17 model has a bit more HP and a new 7 speed tranny. How much better will the new NV tow compared to my '15? Is it worth the major $$$$$ to upgrade?

  10. Just finishing a van conversion on a 2012 NV3500 HD SV into an efficiency apartment on wheels. Great vehicle for this application. Also tow a 30' trailer with the factory installed towing option.
  11. Everything I can find seems to imply that his NV is up to the task, but safety first and all! It's a 2006 Jayco bunkhouse, a bit over 7,000#, and would be the perfect home and office on the road for myself and the nonprofit ProBoneO Program! Here are the details from the man with the van! Thanks in Advance! - DR and service dogs Riley & Mellow I have a 2012 NV 3500 HD SV Cargo. In the owners manual under towing load specification the GCWR with accessory hitch is 13,500 lb. and with tow package it is 16,000 lb. I don’t have a tow package. I want to add a class IV weight distributing hitch to the van. What is it about the factory installed tow package that lets one tow an extra 2500 lb? Is there any way I can do that with after market accessories? Any opinions about which hitch brands to use? Are the U-Haul hitches bad? Most of the travel trailers we look at have dry weights around 7000 lb. so I really need that extra 2500 lb. for stuff in the trailer and van. The 9500 lb. towing capacity was why I wanted the NV V8 but it seems like I was thrown because it looks like the towing package is standard from 2014 on.
