    Tire Update

I may have this wrong, but it appears they are not as aggressive as some AT tires and are good on the highway and maintained gravel roads, or clay roads in your neighborhood. Looks like they will be a good choice for us. I believe Bamps also plans to put them on his NV based on past use. Thanks for the audible test. I know you changed out the spare as well, and I'm considering doing this. Our van was built in late 2011, so the spare will soon, if not already, be 6 years old. Tire manufacturers consider 6 years the limit, but the spare may be serviceable for 10 years. I would hate to have a flat miles from nowhere with a spare that old. When you put the ATm on the spare, did the wheel match the others, or is it black? Our wheels are "painted" silver and I suspect the spare wheel is black. Even so it would be reassuring to have 5 new, similar tires
  2. Check out theoysterandthepearl on instagram. You can get there via TL's latest post and comments. There may be many more camperized NVs than I imagined, but few appear to know about this forum. Perhaps, a separate forum? Most, however, may be too busy on other social media. That said, my "travel info sharing" thread probably belongs on instagram. Not another bookmark and password!

Thanks. I agree; they are certainly cheaper than other brands. Discount Tire reviews shared your view for the most part.

    Tire Update

ASD Dad, Are you getting close to 10k on your tires? I am considering these but reviews on the Hankook site say they get very noisy around 10-15k. Tread wear is minimal at 10k, but they will not buy them again due to the noise.
  5. This topic is dated regarding SMBs. We have only seen Fords Eseries and Sprinters. We have, however, seen Transit and Ram conversions built by a variety of converters. Very few diy builds. In Organ Pipe NM in the site next to us was the tallest, longest Transit. Single guy about 2 months into his diy. The rear portion was his bedroom, reported 6' across and 4' wide, with cargo space underneath. A curtain closed this off and the living space was about the same as NVs. Cabinets, microwave, refrigerator on the passenger side. Rear cabinets and a couch on the driver side. No plans yet for water or bath. No windows as he intends to stealth camp most of the time. He chose the EcoBoost as he did not want another diesel. Really tight fit... He was there part of a singles RV group (WINS) that planned to convoy into Mexico. 40 members were there but not all were venturing into Mexico. He decided not to when he found out that only liability insurance was available. WINS had another group event in AZ planned for later this month. Sounded like an interesting group for any singles on the forum.
  6. MR My inclination is to change :-) to ;-) and wonder how NV nav and our highway system suddenly became so smart.
  7. ORGAN PIPE CACTUS NATIONAL MONUMENT Just back from a 5 day, 400 mile "short" trip in the Sonoran desert. We never left Pima County, Arizona. In the summer, the temperature can get to 119*, but this time of year it is mid-70s and low 40s. Too early for spring flowers. Although isolated, this is a good park to visit to get a better understanding of this part of the country. The no hookup campground has 208 sites. If you are in a camperized NV ask for the tent sites, when assigned a site. There is no shade to speak of, and even in the 70s, the sun is brutal and heats up NVs quickly. So bring your own shade to spent time outside. We have a "bug" screen room from REI with a rain fly and awning that became our "shade shack." (Poor reviews on this product, but it worked fine for us.) At sunset, we rolled up the awning. There are lots of Ranger programs during the day and one at night. Most dirt roads can be driven in a car. A Ranger van (Transit) tour is also available. This park is right on the border with Mexico. In 2005, a Law Enforcement Ranger was killed when he intercepted drug smugglers. The park shut down for awhile, and at one point only Ranger led tours with additional armed Rangers were permitted. Today, the park is heavily patrolled by Border Patrol as is most of southern Arizona. There are warnings to pickup no one, even in distress. The gravel road to QuitoBaquito is right on the border, separated by a fence of concrete filled posts set in concrete. On the other side is a major highway, Mexico route 2. A lot of foot traffic here. There also are emergency beacons and water barrels as you go farther into the park.
  8. In Tucson, Jim Click owns Nissan, Ford, Dodge and a few others in the same auto mall. They each make high top vans so one might have the answers and paint booth you are looking for. Jeff Lovato (jlovato@jimclick.com) is the collision manager and he may be able to help. I dealt with him when I crunched my rear bumper. I was happy with the repair. His office is on the Nissan lot but they may only have one body shop for all Click's "stores." I'm not saying you have to travel to Tucson, but you could look for a similar set up at an auto mall nearer you.
  9. Since few, if anyone, have reported experiencing this, what activated the app for lack of a better term. Do we have the audible turned off? Or is this part of the nav upgrade? I read your post to my wife and she said "we always go slower on curves" than posted, so maybe we never heard it. We can't wait for the audible scolding similar to the incessant "at the next... for going too fast or slow. Reminds me of a landing in St George, Utah, which at the time was, may still be, on a mesa. Small 4 seater plane. When the pilot tried landing in strong side winds, we went side ways and there was beeping. Not enough runway, so we tried it again.
  10. I get your point, but would you, as in all of us, notice a warning light, unless it beeped, any more than than the PRND appearing. In your case, would the computer know you intended or not to disengage it? In Daniel's case, you would think it would trigger a code; a warning light would have been great as well. Your finger guard solution works, unless you are talking about it disengageing on its own. Then it is "dangerous and irresponsible." It will be interesting to see how Daniel's plays out if he keeps his NV. Remember mc2guy?
  11. ASD Dad, you're right and Chris_cm has pointed out it is up to Nissan to prove the the "mod" or person caused the problem. You are also correct that the push back is to make you go away. My point was overstated. My point should have been about the potential runaround you can get for minor problems. It may have been on this or the SMB forum about an alignment issues on a 4x4 conversion. The dealer referred the owner to the tire shop and it went back and forth until the owner pointed out the dealer sold the 4x4 van. It was resolved through the dealer. Daniel should be able to avoid this runaround.
  12. Wollip, I agree with you that Nissan Consumer Affairs can do the job, but they are inconsistent. I had such an experience that ended well. I also agree you need to find the right service department no matter how far away or get to know the service manager. There is no reason or obligation to use the dealership that sold the NV. This is the main reason I wouldn't buy the lifetime maintenance from a dealer when it can only be used at that dealer. Same for the rewards program that is dealer specific. Daniel appears to have what he needs to get this resolved, short of a new van. Maybe he will get the powertrain warranty extended. This is off topic, but I wondered why a dealer doubled the powertrain warranty to get a sale as someone posted. Most of us will be into another vehicle long before that.
  13. Wollip, it does show you when it is engaged.
  14. If you want to follow his almost daily diy NV projects, he only posts on instagram Tim Lutz (@vanlifetravellogue) I just check the blog and link on the bottom of the page.
  15. It is what it is as they say and has not changed for the better. Stick with it and make sure there are no catastrophic issues with your NV. At this point, you seem to want 2 things: oem rims and tires and for them to take your van back. They may go with the first but you are not likely to get very far with the second... If you get nowhere, contact Utah Consumer Protection if there is one. One thing you may want to try. Tim Dahle, the owner, probably has an ego and is all over social media. Find him and let him know what is going on. Neither the general or service managers will have conveyed your displeasure. To think, it was not long ago that we had to do this with ink and stamps... progress.
  16. axulsuv sold his NV 1500 some time ago and went with a KIA Soul. No problems with his NV. Your dilemma brings up an important point for anyone modifying their van. Nissan warranty and customer service will drop responsibility and watch the door hit you on your way out. In your case, they CANNOT do this. You bought your NV with those rims and tires from and installed by the dealer. Did you tell customer service this when you contacted them.? I would go the other dealer in SLC and speak with the service manager about the effect on the transmission and/or engine. If they say no problem; the "cutoff" or whatever prevented damage. Ask the service manager the same question at Tim Dahle Nissan and have him put it in writing. No problem if refused; take notes. You have a good case going forward as they say... Keep the pressure on but keep your cool for now.
  17. Windows all around? The windows should be the same size, right side and left side, but not front to rear. It took me awhile to realize this on our van. The problem may be that you ordered the windows, but not the trim, thinking or being told the windows came with trim. It may look worse up close, but how is this a hazard for your dog passengers? A simple fix would be to find caps for each bolt. Go to a hardware or auto parts store to see what will thread on. This will give you time to find a trim piece. If there is a NVP on the lot, check out the trim and order the part(s) if the caps don't work. Go to their auto body manager, he will know what parts you need. What happened to you motorcycle photo? If you can find something to cover each bolt, try to file or sand the worst jagged areas of the cutout. Then mask off the area around the window and paint it with bed liner. It comes in a spray can or you can brush (water soluble) it on. It is thick and will fill in any gaps. I used this on the step into our van that wore thin.
  18. CR Laurence Automotive Products has what you need, plus check Laharview's conversion posts for installation. We have the vented version on both sides, while he has one of each. They should fit the holes they made. More $ however. Nissan is not likely to help with the above, but take your van to a reliable auto glass business and see if they can fabricate a molding and/or reinstall them. OR, buy some of the same fiber board used on the inside of your van to make a frame around the windows. Out of sight out of mind. Nissan may go with this. If not, do one or both anyway and file a complaint with Nissan commercial to get reimbursement.
  19. CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL and the "WALL" Just south of Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca is the entrance to Coronado National Memorial. Beautiful country. When the ranger was telling us about the history and trails in the area, she mentioned the view into Mexico and the "wall" from Montezuma overlook. We skipped this 2+ mile drive up a dirt road with switch backs due to the weather; we plan to return. But it made us wonder why we didn't notice the "wall" on the drive in. Essentially the "wall" is an 18' steel vehicle barrier with a parallel drag (Border Patrol trucks drag tires behind) road to help detect foot traffic. Drag roads are along many rural, east/west roads near the border. The "wall" does not cover the entire border, so there will be 52 high tech surveillance towers as well. I took the second photo on the way out of Coronado NM. We were about 2 miles or so away, so it looked more imposing to the eye as it stretched east. The "wall" is part of our environment, but draw your own conclusions.
  20. Nissan also treated him to a night of stealth camping on the dealer's lot. After the work was completed, they told him his "house was ready." I sent him an email telling him about this forum. No response. He is busy on instagram and to a lesser degree on twitter. People have asked him questions but that isn't the best media/medium(?) for questions and answers.
  21. Found the photos on instagram. Trouble started outside Moab; engine shut down. Roadside service covered 2 tows ($1500) plus the cost of replacing the fuel pump at a commercial dealership in SLC. Great warranty!
  22. Now I get the tr (truck) driver, just slow I guess. Bates also is/was in Edmonton at a commercial dealership. You may have bought yours from him. We camped at Whistlers. Between a bear alert and elk in the playground, we enjoyed our short stay. Is the no fee part of a centennial celebration?
  23. Welcome to one of the early believers. Based on commercial van sales data, very few NVs ever made it to Canada. Bates, who sells them in Alberta (?) always wanted more plus 4x4 to sell. You must have to deal with "What is that?" much more than we have in the lower 48. What part of Canada are you from? We would be interested in any camping suggestions you might have. We want to return to BC and the eastern provinces.
  24. I found a photo on his instagram or 500px (new one for me) of his NV being loaded onto a tow truck near Moab, Utah. No explanation of the problem, but he mentioned paying $1500 for 2 tows. (There are warning signs in Canyonlands about expensive tows,) Service in Salt Lake City (?) was covered by the warranty. These are the only details provided, but aren't roadside service and towing covered under the 100k warranty? Or does it cover only the original owner or expires around 50k as it did with our 36k warranty?
  25. Based on his photos, it's dispersed camping so gray water on the ground may not be an issue. I had to get under the driverside to tighten some water connections. There's not a lot of room, It may be enough if you don't have water connections and a very small, vertical gray water tank like we have. I'd bet the black water tank goes unused most of the time. His blog has been dormant since 5/16, but twitter and other social media are current. Check these out as well.
